Weta Sculptor Explores Hagglethorn Hollow
September 21, 2018 by dracs
Johnny Fraser-Allen is an experienced sculptor at Weta Workshop and he's bringing his incredible talents to the tabletop with a modular and customisable terrain set - Hagglethorn Hollow.
Having worked on the Hobbit films and sculpting models for the Labyrinth board game Johnny saw a gap in the market for these particular styles of fantasy buildings and terrain.
Hagglethorn Hollow will be coming to Kickstarter on the 26th of September so keep your eyes peeled!
Which games would you use these beautiful pieces in?

Love the terrain and the interview was great; awesome look into what’s coming as part of the KS 🙂
Also, now I’ve watched the entire thing – Johnny is awesome and I have a man-crush. Also, I’m so invested in the idea of their Wandering/Walking Woods too!
Get in line Ben
Will be very interested to see the pledge levels and price point. If the latest Dwarven Forge Kickstarter is any indication, there is a strong market for high quality, detailed, thematic terrain. Likely won’t be jumping in on this (well, maybe ‘a’ building), but am very interested in a future tree/forest-based Kickstarter.
Love the tree creature! These could make for some nice gifts in the future. Thanks for sharing Hagglethorn Hollow it brilliant.
This stuff just looks so amazing, this was so much more interesting and informative than the tested video.
For the record, this was perhaps the most fun I have had with an interview.
I can’t wait to see more of this project and especially the wandering woods. I will definitely have to pick some up for my Lord of the Rings force.
What a fantastic product and a great interview too. The enthusiasm (from Johnny but also Sam and Justin) is inspiring. No space for giant buildings in my cramped tip of a gaming room, but I might need to get some anyway.
His interview with Adam Savage on Tested via you tube is worth a look as well
This is my dream…
Just another level of quality and skill there, I can only imagine this will be one expensive KS and rightly so.
Have this guy on every week, his enthusiasm is infectious, his skills are insane and his knowledge immense.
Absolutely – more please!
This looks amazing
One of everything please, now how much can I get per organ?
Where is the contest that allows me to win a chance to sit down with this guy over some beers and just take in all his enthusiasm? I hope that I can afford their stuff. Maybe I can get away with at least one piece. At least there will be a STL KS coming later. Maybe a piece now and then the STLs later.
What a wonderful interview, i will be watching with interest but expect the KS to be a bit expensive and out of my league. Best of luck with it .
I saw that piece on Tested with Adam Savage…. the level of skill makes me never want to build anything again XD
Im completely blown away by this terrain. Im exactly the same when gaming, flat playing area doesnt seem right for me so I have a fair bit of terrain now but this is just amazing. I love the modular system it has where i can use all the bits to create different areas.
Very impressed
There’s undoubtedly a lot of skill here, and it’s great to see NZ so well represented. But what stands out most to me is the vision, and commitment to that vision. Can’t wait for the KS on Wednesday!
Oh man this is fantastic, what an inspirational guy too.
I also well up when trying to explain the March of the ents, the purity of nature marching on the menacing industrial disease that isengard becomes!!

Went straight to kickstarter and back this. Brilliant terrain and a truely inspirational creator! The look of the entire range is stuning. Cant wait to see more from Johnny Fraser-Allen. I recently bought the blue ray edition of Dark Crystal and Labyrinth and watched them with my wife who had not seen them (!) So at the time watching this interview I am deep down in the works of Jim Henson and Brian Froud, perfect timing for this campaing for me. Great stuff! Also the trees… wow. Me and my caming group are cruently dividing up how to pledge to… Read more »
