Community Spotlight: 40K Cavalry, Cruel Goblins & An Apocalyptic 7TV Project
September 21, 2018 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Forums and Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking pieces this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Drookian Fenriders by minigiant
The first project we're looking at is for the 100th Drookian Fenriders, a massive project and undertaking by minigiant. This is quite the passion project for him, bringing this set of cavalry to life from the world of Warhammer 40,000.
The collection was originally created using a lot of kitbashing and bitz boxing. minigiant delved into the reserves of what he had alongside some of the kits from Forge World and created the miniatures that you see above, ready to be cast into their final form.
This is a superb look at the beginning portion of a project. It's been great looking at the inspiration for this in an old Codex and following through the process of kitbashing and then sculpting some additional parts onto the models before they went off to be cast.
Hopefully, this is just the beginning of the process for minigiant and we'll see him stepping up to paint these as well in the coming weeks.
The models however at this stage are looking fantastic and it's great to see someone bringing now only a traditional kit to life but also throwing some of their own personal tweaks into the mix as well.
When it comes to component choices, the mix came to life with some of the Death Riders from Forge World plus some kits from Victoria Miniatures and Puppets War too. I would recommend going to keep an eye on this project as it is no doubt going to be excellent.
Knightmare Goblins by subedai
Next up we're looking to some painting by subedai. These Oldhammer style Goblins are fantastic from Knightmare Miniatures and the paint jobs have served to make them pop all the more. I love their cruel faces!
Each of the miniatures has been painted with a classic greenskin style to them which is very reminiscent of the artwork that we used to see in Warhammer Fantasy books of gold. I love the attention to detail on the yellowing teeth, the highlighting on their green flesh and the not-black cloaks about their shoulders.
These are how I view most goblins in Fantasy games. They either have this cruel and malicious look to them or are a lot cuter, more like the goblins from Pathfinder for example. Each of the characters here has been painted very well indeed and the weapons and armour compliment their light skin nicely.
Make sure to check out the project for LOTS more painting as well which serves as a great inspiration!
7TV Apocalypse Vehicles by jraldridge
Last but not least we're looking towards the work on some vehicles for 7TV's Apocalyptic game. The range is going to be coming together from Crooked Dice soon but it also offers up a great opportunity for people to do some kitbashing.
The first vehicle (seen above) is this awesome big rid which will be trundling across the wasteland as a rolling fortress. It looks fantastic and suddenly not at all like one of the toys you might have picked up at the local store.
This is a quality which runs through all of the projects that jraldridge is working on, taking these toys and then making them into brutal vehicles of war.
It's fascinating seeing the kind of work people do for post-apocalyptic gaming. The sky is the limit for sure, especially once you start bringing out the bent metal and wiring. You can see some of the different components that jraldridge has been using here.
Plenty of old sprues and some new ones have been thrown into the mix here creating some stunning vehicles which we can't wait to see pop up in the wasteland.

Brilliant work folk’s the details of the projects is a great help to other doing similar work on their projects, Well deserved award’s
Wow, thank you so much. I just added my golden button to my project header. Hopefully the project can earn some more by the time it is completed. What am I saying, 40k armies are never finished
Rough Riders: When I was a kid getting into 40k they blew my mind! Explosive lances! What’s not to love. Seem to have fallen by the way side in 40k being relegated to either death Corp of Kreig or talaharran units. I much preferred more of a vanilla style military look, and these look fab.
Thank you so much @bluehealer
Those goblins are fantastic.. they have a perfect 90s feel to them
Well done everyone. Some great work here but I have to say those goblins are rather wonderful.
Those Goblins take me wayyyy back (80’s flashback….80’s flashback). Great paintjob on new minis that invoke those days of playing things like Bloodbath at Orcs Drift (and loving it).
great work everyone 🙂
Thanks so much for featuring my project – real pleasant surprise and a good nudge for me to update it with the latest progress.
