I was looking through some of the responses this weekend to a number of the front page vlogs and through some of the forum posts whose title attracted me.

I have noticed that on some of the formats when it reaches a certain character count that is larger than the visual space, it will compress the wording and place a blue ‘read more’ at the bottom of the paragraph. This can be a little off putting at a glance as it now looks like someone has posted a chunky response without spacing it out.

Does this put you off? Do long posts that people have written put you off? Do you read a lot of the comments made or just post a comment and then only look again when you receive a reply or @……..? How receptive are you to the short stories and battle reports people post?

I always struggle to keep up with the Weekender forum post that goes up each week as I want to stay engaged but cannot really put in a lot of time. I therefore don’t post as I see people put in a lot of effort and find the time to keep abreast of the replies.

This is just a random question as my addled brain came up with it.

    Have a good week everyone.

Are you put off by long posts?

Yes. There is only so much time in a day and sometimes text should be condensed. But that’s just me.

For me it depends what the post is about . On today’s XLBS  some of the comments about game meta  seemed to go on forever . No reflection on those posting , it’s just that I’m not interested in gaming in general . I like to build and paint figures , tanks and scenery .  If someone was to go off on a historical ramble  about things I’m interested in , I could spend the next hour in that thread reading & posting  comments .

Not really, if the post is interesting. If it waffles on a bit without going anywhere… pretty much like everything I post… then it can get a bit confusung sometimes. Oh and feel free to join in with the Hobby Weekender as much or as little as you wish, everybodies welcome.

I like long posts if I’ve written them

I will read long posts if it’s a topic that interests me

I still don’t like a post with about 10 pictures of the same figure or scene . I thought that was what the project thing was going to be for

I dislike the compression of posts a lot.   It makes browsing / scanning through the comments harder and longer.   Harder because it removes the paragraphs unless you click to open them up and longer because you have to click and open each one.

I’d like to be able to quickly look down the page and read the posts that I find interesting and the compression makes that harder.

Switched off now guys, we’ll keep an eye on it performance wise and keep me posted on if it’s working ok for you.

But I’m in a happier place seeing it gone lol

Ironically yours is what I consider a long post @noyjatat 🙂

I’m not put off by long posts per se, if I’m interested in the topic I will tend to read them and if I’m not I just san over them. What they do do though is make me feel a little guilty for only ever seeming to write short posts myself (like this one)

Not really but I am conscious of long posts (my own) on articles like the XLBS but less so on forums.  I have no idea why I hold this view and it does seem a little irrational.  But sometimes it’s hard to just sum up something in a couple of sentences, especially thoughts on the weekly XLBS discussion topic.

All depends on the point of interest for me the long post can be dull, or it can be interesting.

I tend to write long posts myself, partly because I have a lot to say, and partly because I tend to be verbose in all things. Generally, I think what a lot of people have said here holds true for me.

I don’t mind long posts at all as a thing that exists. I will start to skim read a post, and if the topic interests me, I am actually pretty glad to read something that in-depth. Especially on things like XLBS where people are really delving into interesting, thought-provoking discussions. If it isn’t, then I move on to the next thing, no harm done!

I do not mind long posts.  The only time they get a little irksome is when someone has too many pics or YouTube links or the like (even then, it’s more the loading time than the items themselves).  Other than that, the scroll wheel on my mouse works just fine.  If the post doesn’t interest me, I move on to the next one. 😀

Definitely like it better switched off.  Hope it holds, performance-wise.  😀
