Let’s Play: War Chest
August 22, 2018 by ludicryan
RULES NOTE: Oops! There is a rules mistake that we didn't spot during the video. In the game, players are only allowed to field one of each troop type on the field at a time.
Ryan guides Sam and Cass as they assemble their War Chests to wage hex-based war on each other.
A new game from Alderac, War Chest is a 'bag-building' game for 2 or 4 players. Drawing coins which represent different types of soldiers, players must outmanoeuvre their opponents on the board to lay down their six capture tokens.
With two completely different armies, both Cass and Sam must account for each other's possible movements and attacks to emerge as the victor.
What other units would you love to see played in War Chest?

Welcome to the team, @cassn
Hex based war game? Whaaaaaaat? 😛
Haha my thoughts exactly 😀
Hahaha
I’m a simple person. If I see Sam on the thumbnail, I click.
Hence why I am currently on four separate thumb nails on the home page. The Sam take over has begun!
You will need your peaked cap and battered goggles for Bootcamp then so you can be Von Rimmel the Desert Skunk’!
Welcome to @cassn
Great video, and an awesome game. I love hex/grid movement and abstracted mechanics, but I also love unique unit abilities, so this is very appealing. I’d not seen it before, but I think I will definitely have to pick it up. I’d be fascinated to see some of the other variants, and other units you can use.
Popped up out of nowhere this one – interesting to watch this and see it playing out!
You’ll have to get @warzan to get you a Terry Pratchett 8 screens @brennon to keep up with it all.
Someone mentioned Pratchett, thus I am summoned. What’s this?
You’d have to have a bigger office @dracs to put all your new screens in.
TP used to have about 8 display units on his computer and asked why he replied ,only becuase he couldn’t fit 16 screens.
Ah yes! I saw a recreation of his office at the His World exhibit in Salisbury Museum (I met Paul Kidby and had a happy fanboy moment).
We got asked if here , did we need two screens?
by the Hospital finance director
I answered with Terrry’s answer.
Don’t think he had a sense of humour!
Welcome @cassn.
Gameplay here looks fun. I’m adding this to my potential purchase list.
More importantly, @dracs the Gargoyles cartoon was amazing and it’s currently available on Disney Life & it totally holds up!
I was much happier when the box was placed to Sam’s left. You could still see the brand/logo but now we got to see the table from the long shots.
Interesting looking game in a vein that appeals to me.
Looks like a really fun and fairly fast paced game, thanks team great play through!
looks a fun entertaining game.
Looks like Cass is a perfect fit for the team. Thanks for the fun Let’s Play.
Not gonna lie, I was happy when Sam finally moved the box.
Nice one, love that randomness are kept minimal, no dice to mess up your day
Welcome @cassn.
@ludicryan how do you determine the units you have, are they drafted or do you choose them?
Both Cass and Sam started with the recommended set up of the four different units on their team. But there are around 20 different unit types that you can choose from in the game. Let us know, however, if you’d like to see a livestream where we experiment with loads of different unit types and four-player modes. During set up, you take all of the coins of a unit type which is around 4/5 and place them in front of you, forming your supply. Then you place 2 of each into your bag which essentially operates as your deck. Three… Read more »
Would love to see another game with drafting or something like that for picking the units, maybe even a four-player so we get a chance to see all the units.
Welcome @cassn and well done for a successful first game on camera. They should get you in on the Kingdom Death series I think you have the kind of approach that would suite that one ?
Thanks Rob – certainly willing to give it a go!!
Welcome to the team @cassn and well fought!
What a great little game.
@cassn calling your cavalry a horsey is a old and honoured term, the cry of hit him with the horse, has been used in our group many times, even it evokes the picture of Yosemite Sam( one of bugs bunny’s arch enemy) picking up his horse by the back leg and battering his opponent with it!
Nice run though here, interesting looking game. Great to see a new face too, welcome @cassn ?
Interesting little game, and less than 24 minutes to table same……..Nice one Cass
Now all`s we need is a four way game, and for Cass to table them.
