Community Spotlight: Epic Level Dragons, Women Warriors & A 3D HeroForge Adventure
August 24, 2018 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Forums and Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking pieces this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Great Red by pafetikbazerka
We start off with a little bit of history here with Great Red painted by pafetikbazerka. This is a model by Ral Partha that you might remember from a number of different Dungeons & Dragons publications!
Considering this is a miniature which is almost entirely red I think that pafetikbazerka has done a sterling job on the miniature and really brought to life all of those nuances in the sculpt. You can even see the fire starting to well up from inside the dragon as he descends on his prey.
This is a truly superb job on this model which really brings the artwork from the period to life and shows off a great take on the classic Red Dragon. I particularly like the blending between the red scales and the pale white horns, each touched up with a little bit of red themselves. The glowing blue eyes also help to catch your attention and provide a nice point of difference across the sculpt.
Fantasy Characters by horati0nosebl0wer
Next we're turning our attention to a trio of ladies that might well be hunting down this Dragon.
These three characters have been painted for tabletop gaming and they look fantastic. I was immediately drawn to the bronze on the shield for the miniature in the centre and the black dress for the character on the left. Each of them has been given a general main colour and then been offset by some nice colour-matching to help compliment the piece.
The amazing yellow/green cloak of the middle figure here again stood out to me as well as the green cloak on the archer. They are very punchy and certainly highlight that these are characters on the tabletop rather than just your standard rank and file characters.
Whilst there has been mention of struggling to get their head around photography for these miniatures I think that have been presented wonderfully. You can find more tips however HERE in a Project that Lance put together!
HeroForge Badlands Characters by nickw1970
After playing around with HerForge, nickw1970 from the community wanted to bring some of the characters from Into The Badlands to life. So, he set about designing the characters as part of this Project...
...and was even able to get his brother to print off the models for him using his machine. HeroForge doesn't just print the models for you themselves but also offers the STL Files so that you can work from home if you wish.
The cool thing about this project that had my attention and made it deserve a Golden Button was the depth that has gone into describing the different steps of this process and showing off just what home 3D printing can be like. As well as showing off the successes, the failures were also shown as well as the cleaning that has to go into some of the models.
You can check out the project in more detail and learn about the different steps to the process as well as the models now that they have been undercoated.
Being someone who is very interested in getting my hands on these HeroForge sculpts I was interested to see how the process worked. Whilst I would love to do some home printing now I think I might leave it to HerForge to print mine!
There is a lot of work involved here and whilst the costs are down I'm not sure it's for my technologically addled mind.

Congratulations to all! Good work!
I love that Dragon, Mine is slowly being repaired after my girlfriend knocked it of the shelf a few! times 🙁
Is there a place where you can get that nowadays? I was having a look and couldn’t find it 🙁
Not sure, I have had one for 20-ish years. It’s number 4325. I have seen one on ebay that did not have a number plate, so may have been a re-cast.
Wow, thanks for the spotlight guys. Very chuffed. I’ve had my piece for about 25 years, it had been begging for repair and restoration for a very long time but I was hesitant and unsure if my skills were up to it so the spotlight is a great confirmation for me.
brilliant work folks great jobs well done.
Ah thanks guys, really appreciate it! Shout out again to my brother Dan for getting me back into this wonderful hobby and for kindly printing my model designs out using his amazing AnyCubic 3D printer. Can’t wait to get some paint down on these figures now
