Games Workshop Revamp A Classic With Upcoming Speed Freeks!
August 15, 2018 by brennon
Games Workshop is going to revamping yet another classic from their earlier years. This time Gorkamorka is getting new tired fitted, a better engine and of course more DAKKA with Speed Freeks.
The announcement was followed by this trailer which shows off the new Ork War Buggy in all of its glory.
Games Workshop certainly does have a sense of humour! I think this could be one of those perfect little game to snap up and play when you want to forget just how grimdark the world of Warhammer 40,000 is and just have a bit of fun.
It seems like there's a big shift away from it being a 'skirmish game' if the name is anything to go by and will most likely be focused around racing these Ork vehicles.
Are you going to be tempted by this? A lot of folks have already been getting somewhat excited about the prospect of this returning and I have to say the new War Buggy is a marked improvement over the old one.
Let us know your thoughts below!

Seems like there is justice for Ork players after all. They have gotten short end of stick so to speak for so long that for them them to get new takes on old vehicles that they have been needing. Now if only they upcoming codex is also actually good.
Never played this game but I can see some of the new buggy’s going into my back log collection as it looks so good.
We just had Gretchinz and now this. The mork the merrier!
This is a nice way to update the ork vehicles range and something that has a small but dedicated nostalgic audience waiting eagerly.
I do like that video
This is pretty cool. The Cult of Speed has been a core in the Ork 40K universe for decades so it is great to see it return. As also pointed out elsewhere the Orks have not received the same upgrade as most other races in 40K. The models are very old sculps (not many other races still have exactly the same models as more then 20 years ago) which is why a lot of people look to alternative manufactures (such as the great Kromlech) to expand their armies. What I particularly like about this model is all the conversion options… Read more »
Ork buggies (and I think a trak is coming too?) have certainly been overdue for a while now, but the range is pretty up-to-date overall I’d say – a lot of contemporary plastic kits in there. They’re not exactly hard-done-by. Compare that to the Eldar, who had to wait just as long for jetbikes, whose guardian sculpts are just as old as those for Ork boys, and who still don’t have plastic aspect warriors other than Dire Avengers. Take a look at the Avatar if you want to see what an old model really looks like! XD. GW are pretty… Read more »
It looks more like something akin to Gangs of Comorragh than a replacement for GorkaMorka. That is, it’s a bundle of miniatures at a reduced price with a game tacked on. I could of course be wrong but I am not expecting anything beyond a set of rules for racing the vehicles; little to no customisation or crew progression.
That wouldn’t be a bad thing. Gorkamorka didn’t exactly set the world on fire first time around even if it is fondly remembered. Bringing it back as a side game and a means of updating the range makes a lot of sense.
I’m not necessarily saying it’s a bad thing. I think GorkaMorka as a concept could actually have a lot of potential but I think this is just a way to ship a lot of Ork vehicles.
You have point there. It’s very likely that this is thought as bundle first and game second just like Renegade Knights and I am sure that lot of 40k players will also consider it that way.
I think they might be testing the waters to see if there is any traction for a reboot of sorts.
Or maybe they mix it up and create a game that has gangs of elves on speedbikes vs Orks in buggies ?
I wonder how many of these new-ish ‘model+game’ bundles are part of a test for new content/reboots.
Fair point, Shadow War Armaggedon was clearly a test bed for a full Necromunda/Kill Team reboot. GW wanted to test the interest in 40K skirmish products so put together something with recycled rules and minis plus some new terrain they knew would sell separately regardless. People went nuts for it so they invested in the full Necromunda reboot and kill team became its own thing as an entry game to main 40K.
I think Shadow Wars was a launch pad for sector Mechanicus terrain, Necromunda was already planned and development probably well underway when Shadow Wars was released
It seems odd to use a (recycled) game as a launch pad for a terrain range. I don’t think there was much doubt that stuff would be popular, whereas rebooting old games would feel more risky. Unless it was about building hype for Necromunda?
@ugleb :
We can only guess at GW’s motives and ideas.
It could indeed have been a test for the new terrain sets as @onlyonepinman suggests.
One does need volume to make the molds for plastic kits viable (perhaps not as much as it used to cost, but definitely not as cheap as metal/resin).
And combining an interesting small scale skirmish game with new terrain could be a win/win.
So is this Gorkamorka revamped or likely to be a racing game?
More likely a racing game compared to actual Gorkamorka/skirmish gaming
I wish I enjoyed the companies games as much as I enjoyed this video.
I just hope the box stays below 100 Euros… the Adeptus Titanicus box was a shock….
Not if you paid attention. They telegraphed how expensive the Grand Master box would be several months ago.
That’s possible. Still I hope for lower prices. I can’t remember and I can’t find it only, but does anyone know what Warhammer Epic 40k cost back in the day? Do I remember it correctly as being a complete game without the need to buy miniatures first? It’s too long ago.
It was a 2 player boxed game with infantry & tanks plus scenery, rulebook and tokens/range rulers. The earlier Space Marine box had card buildings with plastic roofs, the later Epic 40K had plastic ruins. The new Adeptus Titanicus is more like the Titan Legions starter for epic 40k (which was a major expansion rather than a new game/edition) which included the big Imperator Titan and Imperial Knights vs two Mega Gargants and some other Ork version of Knights as I recall. They all retailed for about the price of the 40K starter boxes.
So a *lot* cheaper 😉 Thanks
I think the original Space Marine was either £25 or £30. I remember we thought long and hard before buying it
Inflation. 😉 I was thinking £35ish, but today it would be cheap at £50.
Nice video. Everyone knows red ones go faster.
Nice use of the “bigger hammer” principle.
Don’t think it will be a direct gorkamorka, maybe a gorkamorka/dark future hybrid. New buggy minis are awesome – its not just a bad moon rising.
Glad it leaked gives me a chance to scope out what I am doing hobby wise
Now dat’s a proppa buggy!! Needz more rivetz tho!!! 😉
still not enough dakka though 😉
@limburger Absuhlutely roit!! You did a better job of saying “Needz More Dakka!!” without being cliche than I could think of. 😉
Out of curiousity (like I really have to know… it’s annoying me) What car ad is that based on???
To me it’s GW themselves who are the SpeedFreeks. They come up with so much new great stuff I can’t keep the pace with buying, building, painting. Not to mention playing! So I hope my old Ork army will also do the job when playing this.
I think for a game to be a “classic” it needs to be a “hit” first.
But still good to see Gorkamorka come back.
