FFG Announce Another Unique Game – Discover: Lands Unknown

Following up on their big news of KeyForge at Gen Con, Fantasy Flight Games has revealed more information on their next "Unique" game title - Discover: Lands Unknown.
You awaken with a splitting headache and no idea how you got here. The wilderness stretches in every direction, and something howls in the distance. Your quest for answers will have to wait; first, you need to survive.
This is an exploration game for one to four players, where each copy of the game has different combinations of characters, environments, storylines, items and enemies which means you get a truly "unique" game experience with each box.
So, your games with your copy of the game will tell a completely different tale than your friend's and your friend's friends.
The goal of every game is simple enough - to survive. But how? That is the magical gift lying in wait within each box of this game. In each game, you will play a series of scenarios defined on the cards.
The longer you survive, the more likely you are to find your way home. But what will you need to do to survive? Find shelter? Find food? Work together? Go it alone? Therein lies the beauty of the game.
So the question left at this point, is how much interest does this generate in additional copies of the game? Are you content in the idea of having one copy to enjoy? Are you curious about getting another (or making your friend get another) to see how it's different?
What if a club got multiple copies to play over a series of days?

It is a very interesting concept and FFG are taking it in more directions than what KeyForge indicated. It will drive any completionists absolutely nuts. I’m wondering if this is a new variation of “print on demand” technology. It may also indicate that FFG have automated playtesting to some extent – assuming that they hadn’t already done so…. Are there combinations of the components that are more difficult to solve for than others? Certainly this concept would be much easier to implement in a computer based game. This sounds very interesting indeed. I really like the game’s premise as it stands…the Unique side of things I’m not that fussed by, but the game itself sounds great!
I agree, Ben. Even with my obnoxious collector’s gene, I’m not sure I’d feel like I need to own more than one- but it sounds like a very fun, narrative game.
I’m interested in whether all the randomised components will have an equal chance of appearing, or whether there will be rarity as per a collectable game.
Not at all a fan of not knowing what I get when I pay for something.
There seems to be a trend towards games with content that can be “spoiled.”
But it is really weird to have a game where each copy is different. If a copy of the game is cheap enough, then I could see playing several. But even then, there’s no real way to play the whole breadth of the game.
Well, I think the random game thing is just to try to hook people and make extra money by selling several copies of the “same” game. Some might like it, but I personally dislike it very strongly.
I’ve played a bunch of the non-random spoilable games now, and a lot of those are pretty good.
This one seems odd to me. I wonder if it isn’t replayable, you know?
And I get the feeling that they could have simply sold us a set of all the cards and told us how many to shuffle into a given scenario- and then we’ve have a very replayable game and all the content in one box.
I guess we’ll see how it does.
How is this different then the normal trend of expansion after expansion to drive you to purchase more “game” for you initial “core” game purchase.
Seriously, how is this any different.
Its literally the same fundamental idea, just not as obvious.
Instead of expansion after expansion to add new game content to a core game, you just purchase another core game with a completely different play experience. Same concept, same amount investment.
Sounds a interesting entertaining game for a weekend gaming.
Imagine buying the game having a decent experience with it and then upon seeing a friends copy or reading up on another person’s experience on the net and finding their experience was so much cooler.
In saying that I’m still very much interested as I love this type of game.
I was thinking the opposite. If I love this game and recommend that my friends get a copy, and they hate it because their copy has all of the most boring events in it…
I’m … concerned that in practice these ‘unique’ games will equate to hoping that the ( next ) copy that one buys from the monkeys will be the accidental Shakespeare.
This game is clearly cashing in on the 7th Continent/CYOA style trend and I think that’s great. However, given that it’s FFG, it’s sad but probably accurate that people are already assuming it’s meant to hook you to buy more in some way. I wonder if FFG execs care that their reputation is that of a drug pusher? Not a quality board game publisher but instead a company that will do anything to milk a few more dollars out of you, like shipping half a game or not enough dice.
