Gen Con continues to bring good news as Asmodee Digital announces the upcoming release of their Gloomhaven video game.

"In Gloomhaven, you play as a team of mercenaries on their own personal quests to go conquer a world of gloomy and wicked decadence. Choose your group members wisely, because in the turmoil of battle you can only rely on your wits, skills and spells to fight your way through the putrid dungeons and forgotten ruins."

Due to be released in 2019, the video game will be an adaptation, not a direct translation of the original board game.  Gloomhaven creator Issac Childres has been collaborating with the company and, hopefully, his input in the process will ensure a quality turn-based gaming experience that can incorporate original campaigns while still feeling like part of the franchise.

Gloomhaven remains the top rated board game on BoardGameGeek, so there's certainly considerable pressure to get the video game right.  The dark days of Dawn of War 3 are proof that board to video game translations can fail hard.

Outside of the trailer, very little else is known about the game.  However, gamers should sign up for early release on Steam, as it is more than a little likely that Asmodee Digital will use the feature as an opportunity to receive feedback from Gloomhaven's loyal fanbase and shape the game's future.

This is one we're tentatively excited for in the office.  It seems unlikely that the video game will live up to the success of the original (of course a board gamer would say that), but the trailer looks interesting and Gloomhaven's quality as a legacy game feels translatable to a digital format. Check it out below.
