Steamforged Games Announce Horizon Zero Dawn Board Game
August 3, 2018 by brennon
Steamforged Games has announced a partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe and Guerrilla to produce a board game based in the world of Horizon Zero Dawn.
"As huge Horizon Zero Dawn™ fans, we could not be more excited to be given the honour of developing a board game which will allow fans to explore this incredible world in a new and unique way,” said Mat Hart, Creative Director and Co-founder of Steamforged Games. “Horizon Zero Dawn™ represents an incredible achievement in the video game world and a much-beloved universe for fans all over the world. Many of the staff at Steamforged have been in love with Horizon Zero Dawn™ since it was first released, and so have an intimate understanding of what makes it so appealing and enthralling. With this game, we’re going to give players a compelling new way to play and experience this amazing video game.”
The game will be coming to Kickstarter later this year and it will be interesting to see what avenue they go down for this post-apocalyptic world.
A friend of mine who is a big Horizon Zero Dawn fan has been talking about it maybe focusing in on the Hunter's Lodge and using that as the backdrop for the game's focus. That would certainly offer up a chance for players to delve into the game together rather than it all being focused towards Aloy.
I am hazarding to guess that the miniatures you see above are in the same 32mm scale that we've seen from Steamforged's other games but I could indeed be wrong and this is focused in on a smaller scale for a wider conflict/hunt. But, it could very well be a bit of a 'crawl' game with a twist.
We shall have to see what the Kickstarter brings but I imagine we'll learn more about the game as we move closer to its launch date.
What direction would you like to see the game take?

sounds very interesting. Loved the game on PS4, still waiting if they will do any further DLC’s to continue the story line. Always felt that there should be to this game
My kids and I are big Horizon fans, will definitely be watching for this one. So much they could do with this, but I’m really hoping they deepen the story than just a battle the machines game. I could see something along the lines of Imperial Assault, Gloomhaven, KDM, with a heavy rpg component. Either way, will be fun to paint the minis!
There is definitely a lot of potential for greatness here, but I’m concerned because their Dark Souls game was such a let down.
Let us all hope that they’ve learned from past mistakes.
I would buy the game just for the models, if they stuck to a standard 28mm or even 32mm scale. Anything less, and I wouldn’t waste my time. Steamforged just doesn’t have a good reputation with board games, so the only reason to back a KS for me would be models. I would easily get double pledges, as long the price wasn’t astronomical. On a side note, why is this only going board game? Is it just me, or wouldn’t this be the perfect tabletop wargame for a Cooperative mechanic. Two players, two hunting parties, working together to take down… Read more »
Wow they look brilliant.
Never played the game, but playthroughs look stunning and so do the minis. I am a massive steamforged fanboi but honestly I’d rather not see this now. With 4 kickstarters still unfulfilled, constant delays in retail releases, the latest guild design looking phoned in I worry they are stretching themselves too thin. I would rather see them sort out the issues first. Bigger concern is they are becoming kickstarter dependant.
It was one of the best, if not the best ‘open world’ action game (by a Dutch studio … so yay!).
Lots of nice background detail and of course hunting the robot dinosaurs.
I’m not sure any of this would translate to a tabletop game though.
OTOH … if they do make these robot dinosaurs to scale *squee*
Some of them were gigantic.
It’s interesting to see Steamforged grab a lot of these video game to tabletop conversions.
We’ve got Resident evil ‘soon’ and now this.
Has a lot to do with Matt coming from a exec producer roll for a few video game titles
Never played the game, but I’ve always been attracted to the scope and style of it. I’ll definitely be keen to learn more when the KS drops.
A board game does sound like the right thing for all gaming companies that partner with IP owners. This gives them the focus of just doing a one off game that looks good and no need for added support after words. Table top games need constant releases and updates to be relevant and to foster a community for the tournament seen. I don’t see any IP owner really willing to place there IP in another companies hands for to long. Every major IP the past few years has had a tabletop game and almost all have fallen flat. So yes… Read more »
