Craft Your Ideal Hero In Call To Adventure
July 31, 2018 by ludicryan
Returning from fending off pesky adventurers in Boss Monster, Brotherwise Games visit the other side of the coin with Call To Adventure.
Drawing on Joseph Campbell's famous monomyth structure from The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Call to Adventure draws on the first step of the hero's journey. Each player in this competitive game must guide their hero from humble beginnings to the point where they can travel off on world-saving deeds.
Two to four players craft their hero through three character cards: origin, motivation and destiny. Experience points and legends can be built through tackling challenges and gathering traits.
One of the most interesting aspects of the game is its casting of two-sided runes instead of throwing a six-sided die. This connects the player's actions better with the themes of fate and destiny at the core of the narrative.
It's also a way for the player to have more control over random elements. With each rune providing a 50% chance of granting some choice to the player it guarantees that no-one in your game is eternally cursed by the Gods.
What is exciting for avid readers of fantasy fiction is the first expansion which is set in the world of Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles series which adds new themes and challenges to the game.
Call to Adventure is currently fully funded on Kickstarter but more stretch goals are being unlocked.
With such cheap shipping to Europe, I think I might get in on this one!
What kind of tragic or heroic backstory would you have for your character?
