I think sometimes the enthusiasm goes from a game when you realise it’s not going to be supported in the future (and the releases for the game were never finished).
One prime example for me was Starship Troopers from Mongoose (like Confrontation they got all caught up in the pre-painted “craze” that also took down AT-43 as well). Although in this case it was also due to them losing the IP as well.
When a game is no longer supported, you also feel that there’s going to be no “new blood” into the system, and the minis (if there are any officially released for the game) are also going to be hard to find.
Of course there are exceptions (Bloodbowl and Mordheim spring to mind), but usually it’s either the IP or the Developer disappearing that causes me to stop playing the game. It’s the fact you can no longer generate new players to take up the game and further its enjoyment and longevity in the club.
Sometimes I’ve stopped playing when the “tourney” aspect takes over. At my club a few of us got into the Star Wars fighter game. But soon a rather competitive scene arose that just wasn’t fun for us (although they seemed to have some sort of fun). So sometimes the game will just “evolve” away from you (nothing to do with the developers, more of a community thing). This can be another reason why you might stop playing a particular game.
