Oathsworn Sculpt Up A Fantastic New Badger Mage
July 16, 2018 by brennon
Oathsworn Miniatures got back into the sculpting mood last week as Michael pulled together this wonderful new sculpt for a Badger Mage. I now need this fellow in my collection to help grow my Badger warband!
As you can see is a rather elderly looking Badger who has seen much of the world with his shaggy fur. I love the scarf wrapped around his shoulders, a nice nod back to the likes of Gandalf, and I think the pipe is a great addition too.
I wasn't too sure on the pipe, to begin with, as I thought it might dominate the model too much but it has come out very well and works in proportion to the rest of the sculpt. If you want to actually see how the model came to life then Michael has built a Project for you to check out HERE.
Go and give that a look and let him know your thoughts. Hopefully, we'll see more sculpting from him appear on there in the future showing off this side of the industry!
What do you think of this old fellow?

That is a gorgeous model – I really want to get some of these lovely Burrows and Badgers miniatures for some Redwall characters
Very nice.
Nice thought it was sense from the turtle’s seeing the picture.
Great miniature.
I mentioned on twitter that seeing the project from the beginning to the end is very inspiring.
Really like the look of this mini, was planning on adding a badger ‘butler’ to my planned warband and was going to go with the one with plate armour and club (badger mercenary I think it’s called?), but when I saw the project for this mini dropped that plan and have decided to get this one instead as it makes for a far better butler type. 😉
Ok I am not into borrows and badgers as a game, however as I have been interested in badgers since I first got to see them in the wild at the age of 7(37 yrs ago) so was considering getting some of their badger modes to paint up. Although the person who sculpted this model is clearly talented, for me there are some details that ruin this for me. First up the eyebrows, badgers, even old ones don’t have that prominent eyebrows. Next and this maybe due to the eyebrows there seems to be a ridge between the nose and… Read more »
Thing is, this isn’t a badger – it’s an anthropomorphised badger. So when sculpting, you have to make certain changes to allow for things like expression and character, particularly around the eyes. Hair direction also changes, due to the fact that the skull is now at a totally different angle relative to the spinal column. It’s always a compromise!
I understand this is an anthropomorphic animal, and I suppose if a badger was to spend it’s life on its hind legs then the hair may by the virtue of gravity change from being horizontal to virtical. But I guess because I have been interested in badgers for decades it am stuck in my ways and this to me looks more dog like than badger.
It’s not gravity – it’s the fact that an anthropomorphic animal has totally different anatomy; the spinal column is at 90 degrees rather than in line, for a start. That alters hair direction, neck length, head position, all kinds of things.
This one’s also unusual because the hair length has been exaggerated for age and wizardy-ness, which alters the perceived head shape a lot.
But hey, if you think it looks like a dog, that’s fine – we’re all entitled to an opinion!
Yep, we knew it, another animal for @brennon !
BTW, @brennon stop talking about the game! I might miss my saving throw and have to buy the boook (i really don’t need another game!)
Haha one for the future then 😉
It’s a great model and a really intriguing option for the Burrows & Badgers game. My magic users are usually smaller beasts – moles and shrews – but a badger who was also a mage is a cool idea. He might not be as tough as other badgers, but he’s still probably tougher than everybody else, and that two handed staff is going to more than compensate for any weakness in his old bones. And he’s Fearsome enough that others will give him a wide berth. The only dilemma then is going to be what you get him to do,… Read more »
