About the Project
This was an early project I am bringing back to life, I created this when Soul Wars came out as I was quite taken with the nighthaunt figures at the time. I had bought the first and second edition starter sets but never really got started with AoS and I was determined ovoid the 3rd edition as I wasn't playing it or painting the figures but a friend of my got himself a couple of getting started boxes of Sylvaneth and then complained he didnt have anyone to play against. I then saw Dominion on Waylands black friday sale for half price and I caved. This is my attempt to paint what I have as quickly as possible so I can get them on the table.

Spells a plenty
These are spells from the Malign Sorcery set, painted mainly using the paint guide contained in the book, the metalics on the brassy spells were done using runelord brass and Cryptek Armourshade Gloss with Canoptek Alloy over the top.
The last two spells aren’t from the Malign Sorcery set but I had then lying around and thought now’s the time to get them done.
Almost done
I have been working on these over the christmas period and they are nearly done, just need a couple of touch ups and some varnish.
These basing was AK Dark Earth with a few of Army Painters battlefield rocks mixed in for some height. It was then dry brushed with karak stone and some army painters frozen tuffs applied.
This should be the contents of the first 2 starter boxes of stormcasts, I still have the ones from Dominion to go but I am going to do the endless spells from Malign Sorcery next.
And now for the other side
Now that the Orruks were complete I turned my attention to the stormcasts I had from soul wars and the first box set (dont know if had a specific name). These had all been built and primed blue as I wanted blue armour on them at the time. Some of them had more finish than other and they currently looked like this.
I revisited the idea of blue armour and came up with a new scheme which I will record below in case I need it again. Some of the assembly and priming is dreadful and I should really have stripped them but I couldnt bring myself to do it especially as its quite cold out side.
The new scheme went as follows:
- The armour is chrome
- Some of the cloth and inside of the capes and sholders is Magic blue
- Most of the cloth and bits of the bow are black
- The belt, straps, bag, handles weapons, plumes and parchment are wraithbone
- The hammer on the shoulder, parts of the weapons and other markings are retributor armour
- The belt, straps and bag are snakebite leather
- The weapon handles are volupus pink
- The chome armour is covered with aethermatic blue
- The parchment is ushabti bone
- The plume is gryph-hound orange
- The lighting on the shoulder and crystal phial on the belt are white
- The gold is washed with reikland fleshshade
- The parchment is washed with agrax earthshade
- The end of the arrows is blood angels red
Finishing up the Orruks
This was the end result, the boss was put on a large lump of cork and they were all varnished before I added the resin as I didn’t want that clouding over.
The wheels come off
I started painting the last model for the Orruks, the boss on great gnashtoof, and all was going well until came across this video.
I thought I could do that and printed some bases and got the materials to make them. I was only later that I realised it would take longer to base these than paint them.
Here are the steps I took to complete the bases.
The wheels come off
I started on the last model for the Orruks which is the boss on great gnashtoof, and it was all going well until i saw this video and thought what a great idea for some bases.
It was only later that I realised my paint it quick scheme had bit the dust as it was going to take me longer to base these than paint them.
Below are the steps I took to create the bases after 3d printing some hollow bases to hold the resin.
Hobgrots a plenty
Following the same guys painting scheme as before:
Except mine are based in wraithbone as they were already done. These took a day and bit but it was a struggle to keep going towards the end.
Orruk o'clock
I looked around for a quick and easy paint scheme and found this guy:

I changed a couple of colours but basically its all contrast, these guys were all done in less than a day!
My First One
My first go at a project, I got my hands on a copy of Soul Wars when it came out and spent the recent hobby night live building the models from it. I wanted to give the nighthaunts a go as I liked the models and thought they would make a fun project. The plan was to go with fairly standard GW paint scheme but I would like them to have a inner green glow.
At this point I tried a brown for the wood but didn’t really like it and changed it to a grey for old wood using the recipe from White Dwarf, black, with eshin grey and administratum grey highlights.
At this point I realised that I had lost my green glow but I wasn’t to unhappy with the results.
I will try and get some better photos of the end result when I have a moment. Let me know where and what I improve, photos aren’t the best I was using my phone.
