“House Rules”, can be two things. One is a decision on a known issue with an existing set and your gaming group comes up with a decision on something that could go in two different directions.

The other is basically a mish-mash of existing rules (with bits stolen from multiple rule sets) to try and build your perfect set for what you are trying to play.

Of the two, we tend towards the second. Sometimes an older ruleset is perfect other than being laborious in certain areas (such as moral texts for example, I’ve a set where you can make up to 4 moral texts on the same unit in the same turn while trying to perform an action) as was the trend in those days. We quite often “steal” a section from another set to try and speed up a game (or sometimes the mechanic just feels like it does a better job).

The second is purely for your gaming group. and tends towards players who are perhaps more interested in re-fights of historical battles etc (rather than tourneys). It can be creative, it can cause a big mess (and usually these things are created over a number of years for big games). If your playing rules “by the book”, then I feel it’s important to try and stick with the rules. However our gaming group has one “house rule” about any set of rules where you get an issue……

“If the argument end up boiling down to the placement of a comma (or such like, we all come across this thing before), then it’s decided on a dice roll (no exceptions)” 😀
