The Emperor Brings His Ultimate Power To Star Wars: Legion
July 11, 2018 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games has decided that if you can't get your underlings to do a job properly, you send in the head honcho. So, Emperor Palpatine is making himself known on the tabletops of Star Wars: Legion alongside the release of his loyal Royal Guard.
It seems an odd choice to bring The Emperor and the Royal Guard to the tabletop as I would never have considered Palpatine one of those commanders who would normally step out onto the field of battle to face the enemy down head on.
However, the whole point of Star Wars: Legion is to tell different stories based on your favourite characters so who am I to judge! The set comes with the new model for The Emperor as you'll see above as well as all of the additional gubbins and accessories he needs to use him in game.
He is, of course, very slow and that will be his weakness as he gets pinned down by troops or taken out of the fighting altogether by canny generals. However, when he does get into combat he will be able to bring his force lighting to bear!
Royal Guard
With Palpatine on the tabletop, you clearly need someone to watch his back and that is where the Royal Guard comes in.
These soldiers are elite warriors, able to show their mettle in the fiercest of fighting and hold down objectives. As well as being fierce in combat with their Force Pikes they also have a blaster which can be used to hold off enemies at range.
Use these particular units to focus on key objectives where you think the enemy will strike with melee troops, perhaps inside buildings and deep within cover. The deadliness of the Royal Guard when they get into hand-to-hand combat should deter all comers.
Both of these releases will be coming out later this year so you've got time to plan your army expansions.
What do you think of the new previews?

i has to be said:
“so be it…Jedi”.
alternatively
“uuuuuunliiiimiiiteeeed Poooooooowwwwaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh!”
…and he has Yoda’s stick there.
The Royal Guards look kind of stunty.
Honestly, I think its the bases that really throw the proportions of these miniatures off to the eye. That and bad photography, FFG still doesn’t know how to take good pictures of miniatures. Its truly an artform in its own right.
Emperor and his Royal Guards are looking really good.
Good to see the ” Big Bad ” make his appearance alongside his Elite Guard.
Did not see that coming, could lead to some interesting games as rebels attempt to fight their way to his throne room, but really I think they’re hamstringing themselves by sticking to the original trilogy so tightly. I do however look forward to the Admiral Akbar booster that is surely winging it’s way to us as we speak.
There are some other “what if”-scenarios that could be done like what if Emperor survived and escaped destruction of Death Star II too take revenge on Rebels on Forest Moon of Endor. Of course that one ended up with Emperor killing his own troops for seeing him use Dark Side of Force as he was very careful who knew his secret.
It’s a trap!
Oh, I’m afraid the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive.
Hmmm, as much as i like the Emperor, using him in any game in a tactical situation just seems wrong. He’s the goal at the end of all the battles, to get to the throne room, not on a battlefield. Next to a commando attack on the throne room ( would never do this as any rebels would be walking into a trap so…..
Liked the Han expansion, Veers also but Boba, unless they release other bounty hunters or generic troops, you can’t use Boba with Imperials ( just not the right feel ).
This game is good .. but if it wasn’t for the IP, I’m pretty sure it would be dead in the water. Maybe it’s just me, but the sculpts seem ‘practical’ .. or static. Google ‘Star Wars Unleashed’ pics from the action figure line, and you can see the possibilities for creating dramatic cool poses for SW. But, man, having this post coming out after seeing the Warhammer fantasy heroes post .. I find these figures …lacking.
I agree. When I first opened the starter set I was really excited about the models and flew the jetbikes around the room making excited pew pew noises. But the models that have been released so far are just dull. From the images both the Emperor and the Royal Guard seem quite stunted. I feel they could do much better.
Almost all of the models across the line are in the same pose, It’s pretty bad. What really kills me is the issue that has plagued the whole line even more (minus the original Stormtroopers) is that the sculptor at FFG, the art director and everyone that had to approve after that….all the models have adult torsos and toddler lower bodies. It looks ridiculous and are not even close to real proportions. Typically in most media we get what is called “heroic proportions”, which is longer legs than typical to give a impressive silhouette. This has been a thing boiling… Read more »
Same here. Although I will say that this release announcement decided something for me – I was so uninterested in it that I’ve decided the game just isn’t for me. The models are uninspired, they’ve really has killed it for me. I keep starting to paint another unit but it feels like a chore, I could be painting so many other things. I broke the news to my gaming group this week and one of them genuinely tried to convince me that when I see all the terrain he is working on it’ll change my view of the game.
May be good to take out the emperor destabilizing the empire from the top down.
Didnt the ryloth rebels ambush the emperor and vader on a visit to the planet , this was in the comics so its canon
Maybe they should’ve waited for the Emperor, i think they shoud’ve released another commander instead (so many possibilities) but that said, i don’t mind the Royal Guard! Really loved painted those in Imperial Assault (and the pose was very static…) at least these have some movement even if they are a bit stunted.
I am sorry but I am tired of units that don’t fit any theme, just the minis that one could place there just because they are in the movie, it is an ugly decision, I am tired of the decisions made for this game. Units from Hoth, units that are the highest commander of the movie (that of course will take A LOT of points when you still got not much choices… you don’t even have agents for both sides!!), units that don’t fit… and by the way, the minis are becoming from meh to horrible in high steps… is… Read more »
Yep, that join on the neck and shoulders will need some liquid green stuff.
This is an obvious attempt to cash in on the collectors and not so much the war gamers.
The models are nice enough and eventually I’ll pick some up to paint. The poses don’t worry me . I didn’t expect all that much from FFG models and while they aren’t first class they do what they need to do as gaming pieces.
What has dampened my enthusiasm for Legion is the lack of structure to any of the releases. There is no real theme and in the rush to get iconic units out forces tend to be a bit of a mess. Fielding the Emperor in normal games is also a bit over the top.
Figures for this game have been a bit hit and miss. I really don’t like the joined arms on the Storm Troopers, and some of the poses allow only weak connection to the base (single foot or very narrow stance). These latest figures look okay, the Han Solo figure looks nothing like him.
