DARKSTAR CAMPAIGN UPDATE: DUCHESS ANNABEL’S WAR IS OVER
Darkstar - Background and Setting (Sect 1.3)
In response to requests from community members who’ve been following this project, I’m continuing to publish the background of the Darkstar universe.
This third part includes an overview of “Known Space,” the general layout of the how far mankind has pushed out into the stars in the Darkstar universe, what the colonies are like, what the fleets are like, and with what general “densities” and command structures they tend to work at in these different “distance brackets.”
Hope you enjoy!

Another great read, and a good explanation of the sheer scale of everything.
I am not sure the 17-month voyage number jives with the other information presented (both in the section preceding this explaining the c-number of Darkstar Waves and the 12-month figure given in the bit about the frontier). However, I might just be not understanding how that is worked out.
Great question, @davehawes. The 17-month figure I think was mostly for a 9th-magnitude wave reaching the very furthest outpost at 252 ly. Much of the “Third Band” or “frontier” is much closer than that (Third Band / Frontier is a fuzzy volume ranging from about 50 to 150/250 ly, depending on which direction we’re talking about). Also, the absolute “farthest” that has been generally explored / colonized is not equidistant in all directions, generally shorter along the galactic axis (150 ly) than it is along the galactic equator (250 ly). Very quickly, here is a simplified copy of the Darkstar… Read more »
Thanks for looking into it, and giving such a clear explanation. It was bugging me that I couldn’t make the numbers add up. It’s not important at all to the overall thing, the important concept and its consequences are clear in the text and well understood. Just me querying a tiny trivial detail, which is a bad habit of mine 🙂
No worries at all, @davehawes – keep hitting those “recommendation” buttons and you can ask all the detail questions you like! I think we have sufficient data to answer most questions, if not we can always create it! 😀
