Black Library Collecting Together New Warhammer Horror Line-Up
July 5, 2018 by brennon
Black Library is going to be pooling together some interesting stories from the darker side (as if there could be a darker side) of Warhammer lore with the Warhammer Horror collection.
Here's what they had to say about the stories they're looking to tell...
"Warhammer Horror embraces the macabre and the disturbing and will bring you tales of fantasy and the far future the likes of which you have never seen before.
There has always been horror at the heart of the worlds of Warhammer, from daemonic abominations to baleful magicks and alternate hellish realms; from spectral warriors to mutant alien monstrosities and the creeping dread that inhabits all mortal minds. Here, for the first time, these dark and forbidding overtures are brought to terrifying realisation in a new imprint that focuses wholly on stories that will scare and delight.
Warhammer Horror treads a path into unsettling and unnerving places, engaging with more mature themes that are not for the faint or tender of heart. Visceral, psychological, supernatural, we plan on delving deep into the underbelly of the Warhammer worlds, exploring what is truly frightening and then offering it up to you, dear reader… if you’re brave enough?"
Leading the way is going to be a new anthology called Maledictions which will feature work by Graham McNeill, Cassandra Khaw, Alec Worley and David Annandale and more.
This will just be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Horror stories being forged by Black Library and you're likely to see some old favourites get a re-release too. As a big fan of Gothic and Horror writing by the likes of Edgar Allen Poe, this sounds like it could be worth delving into.
What do you think?

i think it sounds bloody marvelous. well done GW for not forgetting your roots. i haven’t connected with the settings since the 80’s so i’ll be very interested to see where they go with this. will the Warhammer books be set in the old world? if so i’ll be very tempted to pick up the new warhammer fantasy role play.
Comparing Black Library to Edgar Allen Poe?? That might be a bit steep, I think you will be disappointed. However, if they move away from the normal bolter action and try to focus in on the people a bit it could be interesting… but then they have quite a bit of change to go through, because realistic portrayal of humans are not their strength (based on what I have read, so a 15 or so HH novels). To be horrifying you need to engage with the characters, which is not really needed if you read a bolter-action book, I think.
Horror is going through a renaissance at the moment, it’s good to see GW trying to get onboard that. It’s also a good idea to compartmentalise the more horrific aspects of their IP from sensitive eyes. Nice to see Cassandra Khaw on that list, I’ve read her none GW work.
Sound’s good more fluff the meryer.
I hope they reprint some of my old favorites like Drachenfels.
Sounds like a nice counter to the more child base stuff that was recently announced to much backlash
Well done GW for catering to all of your fanbase
Well this is interesting.
Their regular setting are pretty horrific to begin with.
Not clear if this is new writing or reprinting / rebranding of existing titles which are more horror than normal.
Potentially a good idea. Just have to remember that their authors are a bit of a mixed bag. That said, the ones I think are awful seem to have their fan followings. I suppose if you buy a GW book you generally know what you’re getting, and creating a specific horror genre will help with that.
