By Fire & Sword Welcoming New Cossack Skirmish Set Soon
July 4, 2018 by brennon
Wargamer is going to be redoing their Cossack Skirmish Set soon with a new box which will contain all of the previous elements but add in some more Dismounted Cossacks for you to use in your games of By Fire & Sword.
The new set is looking very swish indeed and gives you a great excuse to pick up an army for their mass battle game set against the backdrop of a turbulent time in Medieval Eastern Europe.
The models, all in 15mm, are very highly detailed and you get a nice mix of interesting outfits and stylish soldiers to work with. This is one of the things about the fighting out there in Eastern Europe; they all looked incredibly different and vibrant compared to us muddy Western Europeans and our sodden attire.
Are you a big player of By Fire & Sword?

great looking figures.
Fantastic. Seen some great 28mm conversions for this era (by The Spoony Bardiche I believe) but these look awesome. Interesting era, and at this scale you can start to do it justice so I’m severely tempted to dive in. Only point of order @brennon (and I don’t mean to be a pain in the bum) but it’s by no means medieval. Cut off point for the medieval period can be considered to be circa 1492 (or 1485 in England) – Fire and Sword is very much the Pike and Shotte era as gamers would refer to it.
It’s a really interesting and colourful period. I agree with @bigdave about it not being medieval
As to when pike and shotte starts?. I think there’s a 10 page discussion right there. Personally for me it starts around the end of the Italian Wars in the 1550’s
crikey, you’re not wrong there @torros – may have to open up a discussion thread on the forums…
Technically the Shot and Pike period started in the Italian Wars with Fernández de Córdoba’s and his Spanish using a combination of Pike and Arquebus and heavy armoured cavalry to great effect. Of course this was further developed and lead to what we would called Shot and Pike of the 30 Years War and War of the Three Kingdoms.
This period is eastern Europe between the Russian, Poles, the various Cossack and Tartars, is truly amazing and the film Fire and Sword is will worth a watch
Lovely system. Own some minis myself and I am curious if they still have quality issues.
Especially the horses were cast poorly. I had to send my back 3 times and the replacements werent much better. You had to remove mold lines and flash with a saw because they were hefty.
I truly love the game, I have 3 armies; although can only find curious players and no real following in my local area. I echo Yoshi’s comments on quality and sturdy horse figures. I soles this by buying some cheep horses at Historicon, Fall In and other vendor supported events.
How do they match up with Essex as their figures are usually very sturdy
I have no problem with the infantry and riders. The detail for 15mm is great and a wash reveals the details nicely. The issue i have had are with the horses. The ankles are weak and on occasion the horse arrives broken off the base at the ankles. I have never asked for a replacement as I can get horses, Essex and similar, at local shows. Does this help?
