In answer to the question in the title, I think crap games do die, but even then sometimes they can get resurrected to haunt us!
I suppose the question could be rephrased, less dramatically, as something along the lines of “Does a game have to die if the publisher/manufacturer ceases to produce it?” And clearly the answer is no. And we have even seen the likes of GW’s specialist games come fully back to life in the likes of Blood Bowl etc. which is a response to the fan phenomenon – whereby they continue to play it, curate the rules, and even produce “not-” models for it.
It does take a dedicated fan base for this, but in the internet age and with desktop and 3D printing widespread, that really isn’t too big of a deal as we have the entire planet to play with, so tiny local communities can be networked into something that becomes significant and can do something powerful.
I guess, in the internet age, if you like something you will always be able to contact someone else in the world who likes it too!
