Once You Go Black; A Big New Abyssal Mat From Deep Cut
July 3, 2018 by brennon
No, you've not gone mat blind. This is the new mat from Deep-Cut Studio just simply called Abyss Black. Now I hear you asking just what on earth you'd use this for...
Well, the first thing that came to mind for me was using this for the basis of your starship games. You could add a bit of terrain onto the mat and you'd have somewhere deep within the vast emptiness of space to play on.
I think most of us would prefer a starscape when we play like that though. So, a second idea would be to use this for your board games. The black gives you a good neutral background to set your games on and not only protect the table underneath but also make it a little easier to swipe those cards and tiles up.
It might sound like a stretch, but when it comes to finding something to mount your games on this might be a good grounding to avoid genre clashes and more. It might also work as a good basis for a dungeon delve or a board game which is similar. It almost gives you that isometric look of an old-school RPG when you're looking down at it with the dungeon tiles on it.
I'm not going to lie to you though as you could probably find something quite similar from a hardware/craft store.
BUT, the mousemat and rubber foam on these mats is very nice. So, it's up to you to decide whether or not this is something you'd splurge on.
What do you think?

This isn’t something I could see myself getting, I don’t play anything that it would be useful for. However, I can think that it would lead to some interesting games, potentially you could create a shifting labrynth where you have limited sight range and what’s beyond that can morph into paths other than the original one taken. I just dont think it’s for me as I use the mats I have to reduce the need for huge numbers additional scenery peices, I’d rather have a mat with a road printed than need to get/make road sections where the edges never… Read more »
I believe other solid colors would be great as these could be used on tables for playing board games. I would like to see a 6×4 burgundy or casino green or navy blue to use on my board game table. These mats make it much easier to pick up cards.
The 3×3 might work for games like the Arkham Horror CCG ?? But now I’ve said that, I’m thinking an ivory or tan colour might be better…. it’s tough to see who this is aimed at.
This is the night-fighting mat where all your tactical black wearing primer-marines can at last have their moment of camoflage. Flashlights are optional.
I wouldn’t mind one of these. I think it would be great to play card and board games on. I think its use for miniature war games is a bit limited but maybe I’m just not using my imagination enough.
Honestly, i see myself getting one in the future, particularly as i’ve got Time of Legends:Joan of Arc dropping near xmas and it will help keep the hex’s together nicely.
i opted to get the actually mat addon for my joan of arc pledge
My funds couldn’t stretch to including one on my pledge, choices had to be made and it didn’t make the list of extra’s.At least i can get one from DC now.
This is a joke right? Why not just use a normal printed game mat which is useable in all the situations you suggest, and you get to use it for your favourite wargame too.
Because this ones black…and black is cool.
It’s like ‘How much more black could it be?’ and the answer is none. None more black.
black is the new black.
I’ve seen these in roadrunner instant holes ?
but good for space battles.
I’ve actually been looking for a plain black mat for some time, being mainly a board gamer. The wargame mats that I do have are all thin vinyl prints so this would be a good backing for them. However, for a plain black mat with nothing printed on, the price being asked is too high, when you can go on eBay and find similar for a third of the price.
good idea, but nearly £60 for a blank 6×4 is absolutely ridiculous, £20 is closer to what i would be happy to pay, not £60
Got to admit that although this would have it’s uses after a quick search of ebay I can get a bigger mat for 1/3 price and could have a different plain colour on the back. I suspect that the only difference is that this one will have a non slip rubber back.
Deep-Cut studio make some great mats, I own a few, but you pay for the great art on them. Selling this at the same price as all their other mats seems a bit of a rip-off to me. Stick to selling great looking mats Deep-Cut.
