Games Workshop Detail Three Nighthaunt Heroes For Age Of Sigmar
June 26, 2018 by brennon
Games Workshop has not only shown off all three of the mighty heroes for the Nighthaunt this week BUT revealed the rules for them too. Check out these haunting new foes that you'll be facing as part of the army of the dead in Age Of Sigmar.
The nicest of the models that I saw from the new collection was this fellow above. Reikenor The Grimhailer is a fantastic model, once again barely balancing upon that base there, but looking fantastic all the same. Once a Sorcerer-King, and riding a steed that might have once been from a Chaos horde, he is the executioner for Nagash.
Next up we have Kurdoss Valentian, The Craven King. He is a little more relaxed compared to Reikenor but no less impressive.
He was a man in life who murdered, deceived and wormed his way towards the throne but at his moment of coronation, he was struck dead by Nagash and his soul taken to serve at his behest. His title is now nothing but a form of mockery. He is the one who is ever betrothed to Lady Olynder, the third of the Nighthaunt heroes.
She uses her misery and grief, as we've mentioned before, to unit the wayward souls and spirits around her and has focused that into a weapon that she can use on her foes. Each of these Mortarchs is a powerful mage in their own right but also able to stand their ground in a fight too.
All of the rules for these heroes are free to check out over on the latest blog post HERE.

3 incredible models and again, they all seem easily breakable… the 1st one seems the most sturdy of the bunch.
But i really like them.
nice liking the king with the floating throne.
There’s something about GWs sculpting these days that doesn’t quite gel with me. Don’t get me wrong the detail and conception are stunning for a plastic mini, but…… They seem more like an “artwork” than a gaming mini. I was looking at my Necromunda minis the other day, and the detail, proportions are all great. But it’s the posing (for example all the Necromunda minis with pistol or 1H melee weapons are all “waving their hands around like they just don’t care”. And there no reason for this as the mini’s aren’t mulitpart (yes, they may have a set of… Read more »
I guess it’s all just a personal preference really 🙂 …like personally I love the way they have been doing them 🙂 but then again, I also a sculpter too, so I’m probably just wired to like them more arty and creative 😛 ha ha
I’ve seen many comments over recent years stating that miniature poses are ‘too stiff’ or ‘boring’ even if the miniature has otherwise been well realised. I’m sure it’s a mixture of various influences that see designs like these, but in particular that modern tech allows these things to be made possible (as an easily assembled model). Gone are the days of ‘grounded’ miniatures (literally) and instead the majority of designs I’m seeing are leaning towards turning the dial up to 11.
I have the same problem with most of GW’s offerings. They just don’t have proper movement to them… although they are better than they used to be.
If you want creepy undead with great movement to them, have a look at the Gamezone mounted vampires. They’re spectacular! I use them as a command group for my unit of black knights.
Don’t get me wrong the execution is excellent. But they start to look more like a shelf ornament these days. It’s just a little bit too fussy for my personal tastes. I have reservations about them as a gaming piece (look a bit top heavy…and overly LARGE), but they certainly would make an excellent piece for painting and display.
Speaking to the “gaming piece VS display piece” conflict, I find that nowadays GW’s offerings are getting too large and too fiddly to store or transport.
Gigantic miniatures that are covered in tiny flowing details that protrude far from the model both take up half a carrying case on their own, and risk serious damage every time you travel with them.
I love the big avatars and such in theory, but in practice I just don’t have enough room in my house to even keep storing these things.
These are amazing! To bad I’m a hammer wielding savage. These will probably be broken pretty fast. But that’s what Super Glue is for. lol…
Those three are rather good but I can’t help to feel that those are too scrammed with details and sculpted effects compared to previous ones that we saw. Seems like they just couldn’t help themselves for keeping detail in proper levels instead of over doing it.
Really like all three, can’t decide which I like the most and depending on the point size it’s going to be difficult to choose which I’ll want to field in a game (will most likely come down to which will synergise best with what else I’m fielding I guess). I think I’d likely do a ‘bodygaurd’ unit for each, themed to them somehow; Olynder I think I’d likely get a unit of banshees to represent her handmaidens; for Reikenor I think I’d use the mounted reapers (don’t think we’ve seen official pics of them yet, but if you google Nighthaunt… Read more »
these are incredible 🙂 these Nighthaunt characters are like full on display statues 🙂
I have the old cairn wraith painted for Frostgrave and still reckon it’s one of the very best recent (“recent” in my mind meaning “this century”, seriously) minis GW have done. With a couple of exceptions I love this range.
The chap on the floaty throne is superb.
I do like these minis, each contains nods and hints to various cultural depictions of death and/or mourning. Most obviously you have Kurdoss Valentian and his design of helmet and weapon referencing the version of the Witch King of Angmar from the Lord of the Rings movies. I also greatly enjoy his lore as a man who sought power through deceit and murder and was punished by Nagash with the trappings of rule but none of the actual authority – even his own heralds mock him with degrading titles. As for rules, he is a brute up close, and that… Read more »
The mounted one is nice. The others… meh.
Been drawn in by the ghost, the mounted one is the stand out. Less impressed by the king, due to certain visual similarities and the background I name him the bitch king. Rules wise, all seem interesting, stability will be interesting.
Yeah yeah it’s great that death is getting all of this attention and nighhaunts are shaping up to be a pretty sweet looking army, but why the hell is GW so determined to make us believe that the only faction in order is bloody sigmarines??
…those are some skinny looking contact points…
