Wargames Illustrated Show Off Event Only Che Guevara
January 23, 2014 by brennon
Wargames Illustrated teased their event only model for Historicon and Salute 2014. It didn't take long for people to work it out, so here is Che Guevara...
This rather awesome sculpt of one of the most recognisable figures in our modern history will only be available for those who pick up subscriptions or a magazine at the event, and it's free!
It's actually quite the well detailed sculpt and worth adding to your collection along with their awesome magazine.
Will you be picking up Che?
I suspect quite a few of us guys of certain age had a Che Guevara T shirt or poster on their wall.
when we were younger.
Normally the WI giveaway figure is with the current issue bought at the show. You sure we have to take out a subscription ?
My mistake…
“This 28mm figure will be available as a show exclusive – FREE to everyone who buys a magazine or subscription at Salute and Historicon 2014.”
You can just pick up a mag OR get a subscription 🙂
BoW Ben
In which case he’s as good as in the bag and on my list of stands to visit at the show.
Great looking model.
Can I expect to be picking up a Hitler or Stalin model from them as well?
I was hoping for Poll Pot.
And I nearly fell off my chair! lol
We my friend are thinking on the same lines…. scary
Being a Dave isn’t just a name, its a state of being.
Im still holding out for a Pappa Doc Duvalier… ooo what you could do is: ‘Monthly Dictator Magazine’ every issue comes with a hand painted scale model of the worse ****ers in history, From Hideki Tojo the Japanese Minister the guy who would root through this citizens rubbish to see what they where up to all the way to Maximiliano Hernández Martínez El Salvador’s occult believing leader!! each issues has an in-depth history of there rise to power Issue one comes with Hitler only 99p Bang and the thread is gone! Also im so (c) that mags idea… I didnt… Read more »
Isn’t that a magazine Arnold Rimmer subscribed to?
Ive always wondered why Che Guevara was one of histories more acceptable sociopaths…
I do like the model though and will probably get it at Salute.
I think this all a little unfair to old Che. He was hardly an evil dictator.
He was an evil dictator.
I can think of a more suitable figure for the magazine to give away. Why not make a figure for the Prime Minister who helped to free half of Europe from the Soviet Union – Margaret Thatcher. If Che had been Prime Minister instead of Thatcher, Games Workshop and Wargames Illustrated would not be allowed to exist.
I think WI have too much love for humanity to unleash a Lady T mini on us 😉
It would make a good model for a Falklands style game. Or possibly as a tank commander model perched on a tank turret with her handbag?
He wasn’t an evil dictator.
Would you elaborate on your claim that Thatcher freed half of Europe from the Soviet Union? Internal pressure and attempts at reform led to its dissolution, Thatcher’s role was negligible to the point of non-existent. Not that that’s intended as a criticism of her. It wasn’t her job to bring down the Soviet Union so to have no role in it is fair enough.
Redben you asked me to elaborate, but then blocked my answer. Thatcher’s role was to make the UK economy competitive again. Part of the reason the Soviet union collapsed was because the western world was so much economically stronger than the soviet union. When socialists looked abroad to the West they saw how much greater our economic system was. For example China only had to look at Hong Kong.Furthermore Thatcher stopped the nuclear programme from being scrapped. The build up of military power from the US and UK helped to persuade Gorbachev that he could not win a cold war… Read more »
I think we can both agree that mass murderer is bad. My personal politics aren’t to the left but I don’t see why communist revolutionary is an inherently bad epithet. Gorbachev’s economic reforms weren’t initiated to move the Soviet Union towards a western style economy but to modernise the centrally planned economy, something which would have been necessary regardless of what was going on in the west as it had long since stagnated. He met internal resistance, a split was caused in the party which pushed Gorbachev further towards reform. As part of his attempts to kicktstart the Soviet economy… Read more »
One mans freedom fighter is another mans terrorist…
Genghis- totally fine.
Atilla- my chum!
Some squeaky revolutionary from the SA? Oh noes, call the press.
Just cause it’s an old slaughter doesn’t make it any less slaughtery, dear historical players.
Barring some of the classics already mentioned, it often means it’s more slaughtery.
Don’t forget Tony Blair…
Really depends on where your from. If your from Mongolia then Genghis Khan is and was regarded as a hero.
I wasn’t aware that Attila had cleaned up his image though.
@redben is spot on with its” more slaughtery” comparison.
We historical gamers know the score.
Never mind the bollocks – politics, nice sculpt.
How did we get on to Dictators anyway
It is a blog about Che Guevara…. therefore the entire post is themed around dictators. Or has Cuba suddenly become a democracy?
Che was never the leader of Cuba and he certainly wasn’t its dictator.
He took part in mass killings and helped to create the fascist regime which is in place today. The ideology which he supported caused the death of tens of millions of people in the USSR and far more in China. So whilst he was not the leader of Cuba he was an important part of the implementation of the fascist regime. He did not believe in democracy. As for being evil – take a look at the speeches he makes about the mass killings in the hills. Not only that but I would also mention he planned terrorist attacks on… Read more »
So all USA supported dictators that were in SA get free pass from all horrible things that they did because it was for interest of the USA while communist leader like Che Guevara is some how totaly evil. I just love good old hypocracy.
Which is he, a fascist or a communist? And supporting an ideology automatically makes you guilty of any and all crimes committed in his name. It’s not a technicality, Che Guevara was never an evil dictator. He was a ruthless military leader, a terrible economic leader, and a half-baked humanist. To put him on the same level as some of the other people mentioned on this thread is absurd.
*its name
>He did not believe in democracy. No one believes in democracy, not really. It’s the least bad of the systems availible, but it doesn’t make it “good”. Just least awful. If you put a governing system as some sort of “holy ideal”, it just means you make it impossible to point out it’s flaws. Democracy has flaws. It needs to be constantly fixed to patch those flaws. If you go “MUH DEMOCRACY” and all “SACRED CONSTITUTION” you essentially turn it into a theology instead of politics, and make any argument impossible on account of democracy being perfect. It’s no better… Read more »
Since when did Che become the Dictator of Cuba.
I’m with Donny Miller on this
I take the technical point huscarle – Himmler was not directly the dictator of Germany, as Che was not the dictator of Cuba.
No problem mate but while I’m being technical he’s not a Fascist either. He is at the other end of the political spectrum, a communist revolutionary.
¡Hasta la Victoria Siempre! 😉
Always
Did I read that right? ONLY at Salute/Historicon?
Thanks a bunch from us damn furriners… I’ve been thinking about which subscrition to drop but I think WI just made the choice for me.
A communist revolutionary is a fascist.
Clearly if you do not allow people to vote or run businesses you are a fascist.
In the UK “other end of the political spectrum” would be a democratic socialist.
To think that Communism is separate from fascism seems rather callow.
Um…there are very specific political doctrines, fascism and communism. They might have some common points like strong centralized govt., but they’re not the same. Otherwise you might call Hitler a democrate for all it’s worth.
Poks, Communists do not believe in one man one vote. That is what fascist means.
I’ve seen people call others fascists on the web before but to repeatedly hang the title on someone who has gone down in history a Marxist. Well that has really got to take the biscuit.
huscarle, communists do not believe in democracy.
Correct but that doesn’t make them fascists
You can have Communist Dictator you can have a fascist dictator but you can’t have a Communist Fascist.
You’ve certainly brightened up my day XD
If you are part of a communist movement then you hold fascist beliefs because you do not believe in a democratic system. If you don’t believe in democracy you are a fascist. Fascism is a broad term which encompasses anyone who do not believe in democratic principles. For example, in Northern Ireland it I used t describe various terrorist groups, regardless of their politics. What do you mean you can’t have a communist fascist? Do you think that Stalin was not a fascist? The communists never pretended they were not fascists. Look at Stalin’s speeches. What do you think a… Read more »
Looks like the History books will need to be re written 🙂
I really can’t make up my mind if you are joking about or you are serious in which case you are probably mixing up the political term Fascist with the insult term Fascist. , either way It’s getting a bit silly so I’ll leave you to it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism
In most broadsheet newspapers fascism is used as a generic phrase for anti-democratic tendencies.
The new York times described the Soviet Union as “red fascism” for example.
Hitler described himself as a socialist, and his party was called the national socialist party.
