i got a 7777 point Chaos space marine / Death guard / Nurgle daemons. And i still want more to fill the gaps of units i don’t have.

But when do you “normal” people draw a line and move on to anther project

Your army is too big when :

    • the tournament ends and you still haven’t finished deploying your army
      or
    • you need to hire a truck to transport it to a tournament
      or
    • you’ve dedicated an entire floor level of your house to storage for said army

    etc.

    I’m sure there’s more examples 😉

Normal people? You realise we’re gamers right? 🙂

My main 40k army is just under 13k….
My main HH is just under 12k, when combined with the other HH armies total ~36k….
    (I’m bordering on @limburger s 3rd option 😉 )

Don’t stop collecting because of norms and what others say.

As long as you have time and money you are free to pursue what you want.

Still, I recommend you to stay and expand on your existing army. Do not make the mistake of starting many smaller forces that you then need to sell.

If N = number of models & units in your current army

then the ideal size of your army is N + 1

unless you’ve got a wife/husband/significant other, because then the ideal army according to them will be N – 1
(aka : sell that heap of plastic/resin/metal or else … )

10,000 points is a good solid force size, plenty of options for a 2k game and still got room to change up for most epic games … don’t want to be predictable or fall in a rut now …

When no-one else you play with has enough points to play against you?

When is a 40K army too big?   When you want to move on to something else.

If you feel like trying out some other armies, either as little contingents or as full armies, then do it.   If whenever you consider expanding outside of your army you can’t help but think ‘actually, I’d rather have another squad of these guys’, then stick with what you’ve got.

It’s a hobby, so you should pursue your army as long as you’re interested in it.   Or perhaps, as long as you’re more interested in it than anything else!
