Making A Hobby Space – Cooler

Not complaining, but wow has it been hot this week!  I have been boiling over with enthusiasm but sweating it out on the projects.  So I had to do something.  While I was cleaning out the workshop I discovered a couple of old and dirty fans that I had inherited.  They worked but one was missing a base, and both looked pretty naff.

After a quick clean up they were presentable – but boring.

I undercoated them using Halfords Black Primer…

And using some Rustoleum Painter’s Touch craft enamel paints and sponges I did a very quick transformation.

.  I cut the sponge into finger width pieces, applied the paint to it, and dabbing and swirling got a more weathered and used effect.  The base and cage was done in Old Penny Bronze and the motor housing and fan-blade in Bronze with highlights of Antique Gold.

I started this in the morning before work, stripping, cleaning and undercoating and finished it that night after tea.  A quick and easy project but now looks a lot better.

The second larger fan was more of a challenge as it had no base.  However, I have beams in the ceiling of my studio area and workshop so I thought a hanging fan would be ideal and could be positioned anywhere near where I am working.

I had an old ‘over the door’ coat rack and a bit a picture frame and with a bit of bending, cutting and screwing I made a support.

I used the same process and techniques to give it an old steampunk look.

So now I am a lot cooler and ready for the next project…
