Let’s Play: Solomon Kane
June 11, 2018 by ludicryan
Sam welcomes Az back to the studio alongside Leo and Benoit from Mythic Games to talk about the upcoming Solomon Kane board Game.
Taking us through the narrative-driven game, we are introduced to the four virtues that players will embody as they guide Solomon through the scenario. Throughout, the team must work together and share their resources to solve the mystery at the heart of the story.
Which of the four virtues would you most like to play as?

That saved me some money… not interested… too slow paced.
me too not keen on the game play
I like the minis, but not sure of gameplay will keep an eye on it for now and won’t jump in like I had planned to.
Great video and lovely to see Az again! Looked like a very fun co-operative game, I do think it will add a lot to have the stories to read out alongside the art. I know sometimes with something like this you can get caught up in the mechanics (which can be a lot of fun!), but it’s good if the game has something that keeps pulling you back to the story. Just in case you don’t have your own Sam handy to inject story ad-lib into each mechanical victory or defeat. I do love the gothic theme as well, very… Read more »
So what you’re saying is that BoW needs to run a Kickstarter selling clones of @dracs ?
?
I’m game
Will they be full size, or scaled down? That’s a tough call considering you’re already proudly hobbit-sized Sam.
?
Keeps getting smaller like a babushka doll.
I was unsure about the game until I saw this video and the discussion of it on the Weekender. The figures are beautiful and having now seen the game play, I really like what it’s doing and the cooperative nature of it. I guess one question would be how well it plays out with, say, two players.
Not sure I’ll have the money for it with the new AoS edition coming out, but it will be a hard choice.
An option to buy just the miniatures (even just the four virtues) would be an instant buy for me.
Its good see AZ again, he seems to have been working on his QVC voice. Look out Justin hes after your job.
I hope they do another playthrough. Minis look great but the gameplay seems underwhelming unfortunately.

I think what really interests me is how the gameplay interacts with the branching storylines.
Wow, the gameplay looks pretty dull, that is really disappointing. Maybe the additional flavor text and background they mentioned for the final version will help liven it up a bit, but what was shown here did not look very compelling.
I’m definitely backing this one. If nothing else, then for the gorgeous minies (cause we all know I definitely need more…). But I also think this would be an amazing game to solo. To just sit down on dark winter nights, with a steaming mug of tea and play through the stories.
Boy that was boring, pleased its not me only. It took a hour to move the hero across the board/swamp. It took nearly half a hour just to give dice to each other. The last hour was a reset of the board to fight one ghost. I was really set up for a midnight hunt though swamps to find the evil…
Yeah, I’m a little blown away to be honest. I was watching this and thought to myself “…did they really just spend 1/2 hour to get on the board and move 1 space!!!” …really, really disappointing. I had such high hopes for this one, and Mythic have put out such solid game designs in the past (own and love MBP, and am all in on Joan of Arc), but I don’t know about this one. I can’t believe I’m considering not backing this, given my love of Mythic Games and the setting. On the positive side minis and artwork look… Read more »
Not for me, this is just a game and not a wargamegame game seems to be a waste for beautiful models as they are not needed and don’t add anything to the asthetics. Certainly isn’t a Mythic Battle Pantheon that’s for sure.
Me either.I wasn’t sold on playing ” aspects ” of Solomon anyway, this just helps to harden the wallets resolve of not going for it.I know everyones hobby is different, but this ( as @hithero says ) seems like a waste of beautiful mini’s to me,let alone the slow pacing of the game itself.
it felt like watching the Arnold Rimmer RISK scene from Red Dwarf but without the humour. Shame though as I saved the money to back this.
Yes… Someone needed have dice forced up their nose and then punched to make it more exciting.
I am sold on a game based on its mechanics. In the case of Solomon Kane I am not sold. The basic mechanic is dice allocation with each person needing different dice for their different roles. In addition to that, there is also a bit of area control involved on the board and the mechanic with the event deck is there to make it a bit challenging for the players. It looks like there’s a risk of quite some downtime between turns where you as a player has nothing to do while the active player allocate his dice. Also this… Read more »
I think I need to watch the play through again. It was tricky to follow. Is there a preview rule book to download to follow what’s going on?
At first I also thought the game play was a bit slow, but I sensed that two of the players had never played which would slow it down a little. But as i watched there was dialog the entire game between all the players. The players were always talking and discussing how to reach the objective and what was the best strategy to get there. This is, as it states in the comments, a narrative driven game and the story of the aspects discussing how best to help Solomon defeat the scenario seems to be the main focus of the… Read more »
What you’re describing is a role-playing game. Discussion is an important part of that. But so is action and there’s none of that in Solomon Grundy… Solomon Kane!
I need to see some more play-throughs, it looked very slow and heavy going to start with, maybe when everyone is up to speed it gets more exciting. The production values look brilliant!
There is no items in the game to help solomon in his adventure, no brace of pistols or a lamp for darkness…puzzling
I think this suffers a little bit from overproduction sadly. It feels like they are trying to jam quality miniatures together with a game mechanic which doesn´t really need them. Pity.
I love watching Az play games! Good to see another game from Mythic which also has amazing thematic minis and boards but a completely different playstyle… where as Pantheon was a vs fighting game (primarily) and Joan was a Wargame (Primarily) this is a fantastic storytelling game which outside of a semi-tutorial let’s play video is clearly going to have loads of story and fluff for what is going on on the board and drives people to work together to tell a story
After watching a few playthroughs I’m not convinced. I’m quite a big fan of narrative driven co-op games but this looks pretty dull.
An easy miss for me this one.
