Blood Rage Miniatures Painting

This will just be a quick update as I have finally got round to the smaller miniatures.  By not worrying about display quality and focussing my re on the overall effect, using dry brush, washes etc.  I have been able to finish this batch quicker and still be very happy with how they look.  A painted good miniature is better than a grey one! ?

Finished him off quickly.  I may try and base him up snow and ice style but he’s a boardgame piece so he can wait.  Trying to keep it loose and in feeling with Adrian Smith’s great artwork for the game.

Been way too long since I posted anything here, but I have been painting.  Mainly work on some commissions for a friend, a little blood bowl, a little necromunda.

Whilst doing this I couldn’t resist having a break and starting this guy, Thor from my Blood Rage set (yes I still haven’t finished, but it’s only the human sized miniatures left ?)

Trying to work on my skin tones and the hair tones.  I didn’t want dwarf slayer orange, more a natural look so there’s browns and reds and oranges mixed in there.  The photographer is a bit of a noob ? so please excuse this but hope it gets the idea across.  The RGG painting handle that I got is great by the way – I never realised how much I needed the rotating function – if you are in the market for something like that I recommend you try.

Finished the troll up.  Tried to get a bit of a difference with the other troll and the giants.  Had some fun stippling and playing with washes on the leather.  Turned out really well there, by mixing in various colours it made everything look a lot more worn and well used.  I even tried some basing!?! Real tree that is (well a very small part of one  ?)

Right finished the Frost Giant, trying to be quicker with each one now – this project has dragged on and on 🙂

I’m rather happy with how the cold skin turned out as well.  This guy is finished bar snow.  I’m planning on some powered snow over the base and the rock (much like the artwork from Adrian Smith). As a bonus I thought I would take a shot of the 3 giants together to see the contrasts.  I know I left mold lines as they are just boardgame pieces but overall I am really pleased with the range of styles, 3 different skins and atmospheres (I hope that shows through anyway) ?

OK so I’m supposed to be finishing my Necromunda Goliath gang but he looked all lonely, after all his mountain brother got finished.  Basecoated, washed with a watered down blue wash for the skin then some highlights with the Base colour (vallejo heavy warm grey) , a little ishtar pink from scale 75 and some GW space wolves grey. The right side as you look at him is almost done, maybe a little more space wolves grey in the top highlights to give him a more ice glow but otherwise I’m happy with the direction.  Started with a little army painter red wash on the nose, mouth, elbows and knees.  I will try and get better photography but smart phone is all I have so I’ll do my best.  On a side note I tried using sand and ready made filler mixed for the base.  On the mountain giant I added paint and it set like rock, on this one I had no paint and it set hard but was very easy to rub off.  After applying some white paint it has now set hard but as a surprise bonus without paint it set less “bumpy” and actually looks a lot more like a hard snow pack.  The plan is to add powder snow over the top so I like the happy accident. ? 

Finally finished the giant.  Motivation is the killer for me so as I had a burst of energy I used it to finish him (still got to try and keep the energy to finish my Necromunda project too!) ?

Used a Luke’s AFS trick for the tuft on the base –  old paint brushes are useful after all!  At some point I may have some snow on all the bases but for now, finished!

Not much time to paint, my office has turned into a makeshift cat bedroom so I need to wait till the little man is better before getting more time.  I have made a start on the fur, trying to make sure there is enough contrast to make it interesting.  The skin is nearly done as well, though I may tone the pinkness back.  More progress when I can, I think I’ll pop a post up in the meantime showing my storage solution – all KS and game extras in 1 box.  Thanks for watching my glacier like progress, feedback, techniques etc. always welcome. Not had much time to paint but I made a little start laying down some basecoats and then did a little play with flesh.  Trying for a tanned/warm/healthy tone as a contrast to my troll’s slightly more pale, rugged look.  I’ve recently got a set of scale 75 fantasy paints and tried the pink from the red set as my bright flesh colour.  The paints come out much thinner than their standard paints plus they don’t require silly amounts of shaking.  The colour is also quite saturated too which is also helping me as I never really push the saturation as much as I should.  The army painter washes are also proving great at adding some more mid tones (not that the camera captures all of it) using a watered down green wash on skin seems alien but does help to tone things down and add a little realism.  Plus my now obligatory red wash to the knee 🙂 So one right leg almost done, think I’m happy with the look so onward to the rest of the skin.
