The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug Out Today!
December 12, 2013 by brennon
The second in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy is going to be out tomorrow, Desolation of Smaug. Thorin and Company escape from Azog, pass through Mirkwood and reach the mountain of Erebor before facing Smaug the Magnificent!
Check out the long three minute plus trailer above and then start dropping some comments below about what you reckon to the film from all the previews we've seen and when exactly you're going to see it!
From what I've seen from the premiers across the world on livestreams, the website information and practically every trailer is that we're in for a great movie, a darker movie and one that is going to ratchet the Middle-Earth fever back up to past eleven again like we saw with The Lord of the Rings around a decade ago.
I've loved The Hobbit since I was pretty darn little and while the changes to characters and locations and the switching around of storylines is always something that could grate I am just glad to see the story hit the silver screen and continue to drag people back into Tolkien's fantasy world.
Let me know what you've been thinking!

Three of the top five listed stories are currently movie trailers. I’m hoping this is a one-off.
Just so happened that there was a lot of awesome geeky movie news over the past few days. Not going to happen every day/week 😉
BoW Ben
Glad to hear it :).
Roll on Friday 14:30 🙂
I first read The Hobbit many ages of Men ago. This installment looks spectacular, though I prefer the soundtrack to AUJ to DOS.
Well The Hobbit is also a miniatures game, multiple card games, role playing, cosplay…
Indeed it is, but this is a movie.
A little Robin told me that if I am a good boy, Santa will be putting LOTR LCG “Over Hill and Under Hill” in my stocking!
Hope to catch this one.
Not many regrets in life but missing the first film is one of them *violins*
Can’t wait to see this. There’s nothing like a good read or film for inspiration for a game
Wish I could go but the demands of retail servitude… blah blah. Definitely be going when the cinema crowds die down a little. 🙂
I agree @dorthonian I loved Neil Finn’s ‘Song Of The Lonely Mountain’.
Should I be worried that after seeing the first movie my wife now has the hots for a dwarf?
Yes
Size doesn’t matter
.. so I am told … :*)
Only downside is Ed Sheeran has done the theme song. Ed Sheeran AKA Ed Shed-Head.
Seems to have divided opinion.
It seems more schmaltz than Smaug to me tbh
Love the way South Park takes the piss in their ‘Rings’ episode……
‘3 rings were given to the Elves, 4 to the dwarves, and 9 to the Glucart Glemlings of Gelgemon’
I saw it and it was orgasmically awesome epicness 😀 😀 😀
Oooooh looks awesome sauce 🙂 with goose bumps on my skin, and butterflies in my belly, i do believe i have a film crush
Smaug the stupendous…. that’s how to do a movie dragon.
Bombur in a barrel – a lethal weapon in many ways!
Aye there werw some flaws but overall I enjoyed it.
Anyone with arachnophobia will probably hate a chunk of the movie – lots of BIG spiders.
It was all kinds of awesome! Some parts could have been done better I suppose.
Hopeing to see this on Wednesday. I am also hoping that they make a film of The Children of Herin and The Silmerillion (SP?) As the audio books are great! The Silmerillion is difficult to listen to at times, unless you like to here a lot of long elvish names etc. Still would make an epic film to cap all the stories of, maybe the untold stories too?
save your money guys i have lost 3 hours of my life – its a total crap – what a waste of 20 queen quids – shite.
did you watch the same movie I did???
This may be a classic example of enjoying it more because I haven’t (yet) read to book!
I paid £4.05 for my cinema ticket and I think I just about got my money’s worth. It’s an awkwardly stitched together Frankenstein’s monster of a movie with none of the additions being any good or complementing each other. The result is that it loses the central narrative, the tone is all over the place, it meanders, is bloated, and is a bit too pedestrian. There are some genuinely naff bits, like the return of Sauron and the dwelf romance, but most of it is decent. It’s at its best when focusing on either Bilbo or Thorin, which it doesn’t… Read more »
I read book, and thats exacly the reason i didn’t liked movie is too long – another movie about running in forest, in caves, open field etc. ..and they change story as well to worse. if that would be done as first movie from tolkien world maybe I could like it, but it isn’t. Its I’ve been that did that – lets do it again because it’s goos with golden eggs movie.
I think this displays what needs to be done to you, hehe. Joking ofc. 🙂

This was aimed at @Radegast6, but alas I put it in the wrong place, story of my life, hehe.
…and haters will hate….
so you want me to be killed because I dont like movie. It tells a lot about size of your brain.
Just got back in from watching it in 3D and I havr to say that I loved it. Although I think I may be getting old as I thought it was a bit loud, hehe. CGI, as @redben suggested, is amazing! I was only troubled with the fact that Smaug seemed really stupid imho, almost about to catch a dwarf when he hears another dwarf across the hall call him a name, so he changes his mind and goes after the other dwarf. Kind of reminds me of Austin Powers and the ill tempered sea bass scene, lol. Not really… Read more »
