A fun game with cool minis, it’s a beer & pretzels sci fi skirmish game.
With 12 armies, each consisting of 10 models, there are a wide variety of play styles and each army looks different and plays differently.
List building is simple. Chose a scenario, chose 5 models. Done.
Most game information is contained on the unit stat cards but each model gets a two page explanation and suggested tactics to most effectively use that model.
The biggest downside to the game is the game company itself. Megacon Games is a very small company and it shows. Extremely difficult to get ahold of, it’s nearly impossible to get errata or clarification on the meaning of certain rules.
That being said, I love this game but it’s up to fans to do the heavy lifting in order to make this game shine.
The little I’ve played of the skirmish game, the more I like. 2.0 cleaned up a lot of the oddities. I’ve actually played the board game Recon more than the skirmish. I agree Megacon has got in their own way on this though. Gamers are hard to win back and I don’t think they’ll ever be able to right the Mercs ship short of a selling to a bigger company.
