Games Workshop Preview The First Idoneth Deepkin For Age Of Sigmar
April 10, 2018 by brennon
Games Workshop has previewed the first of the Idoneth Deepkin for Age Of Sigmar, coming this weekend. We start off with some of the characters for the force and this fellow...
The big character that is coming your way is The Eidolon Of Mathlann. This fellow can be constructed in two different ways as you'll see below and is the embodiment of everything that the Idoneth want to bring to the table.
It seems like regardless of how you want to bring this fellow to the tabletop, he will always come with an extravagant hat. The model is rather magnificent, summoning up that cloak of water and the design of the armour is brilliant too. This is going to be one of the most fascinating models to paint as well.
On a smaller scale, we also have Lotann, Warden of the Soul Ledgers. He might not have the grandeur of his master above but I love the idea that this fellow goes into battle with a friendly octopus, also known as the Ochtar.
I like the idea of working with all the blues for this range of models. I have started to really like working with blue and silver as it always looks good when you've finished. The team at Games Workshop really have done a great job with the narrative built into the models.
Brutal Warriors
As well as the models above we also have the first warriors serving under this force. Here we have the Namarti Thralls.
These are sinister and twisted Aelves, the end product of some strange magical experimentation. They look very cool indeed and somewhat straddle the line between both Dark Elves and High Elves from the old Warhammer Fantasy. It will be fascinating seeing the way the skin gets painted up by different collectors.
Deep Sea Terrain
As mentioned in the article by Games Workshop, the Idoneth Deepkin appear to be under the water wherever they fight. With that in mind, it seems like some elements of their environment come with them. That is where you get terrain like this.
Here we have a wrecked ship, The Etheric Vortex Gloomtide Shipwreck. I could imagine this just getting dragged along in the wake of their nautical army. The Mortal Realms certainly are a weird place and you could imagine this wild watery force creating all manner of strange environments on the battlefield.
What do you think of this first wave (hah)!

When I saw that these guys were going to be available so soon I cancelled a couple of kickstarters I’d backed and that money is now being saved for some deepkin pre-orders, for some reason I thought pre-orders would still be months away. Loved the look of them since they were first previewed. That schedule betweeen, leaks, teases, reveals and pre-orders has been pretty tight and, for me at least, really exciting.
The idea of the environment coming with them is brilliant. I can see plenty of pet shops being raided now for their fish tank decorations lol.
That shipwreck would come in handy for my Marienburg army.
Yeah going to be picking these up for sure. Lotann with his octopus is a great mini.
What do you know. Those Deepkin are rather nice.
Not particularly interested in the Deepkin myself, but I am tempted by Lotan (minus octopus) as some sort of mortal scribe to serve my Thousand Sons; pity there aren’t any rules for Thrall Wizard bands or the like in the TS Codex (although I could always ally in a detachment of Traitor Guard using the FW list). Speaking of Lotan, could just be me, but when I look at the mini I don’t get the sense that the octopus is a helper/familiar, but rather I get the sense that it’s the master and puppeteering the scribe like some sort of… Read more »
Thinking about the octopus in charge point, I think this is another missed opportunity with the Deepkin, and one which may have made them more palatable to those who’re disappointed that they aren’t actual fishmen; the Namarti and other Elves could have been mind dominated slaves under the control of the cephalopods and/or fishmen, with them being the bulk of the army and the fish-, cephalopod- and crustacean-men being an elite core. This could also have lead to an interesting mechanic in the army which I don’t think any other AoS army has (may be mistaken – haven’t paid much… Read more »
You can’t please everyone.
If they had made them fishmen, a lot of people would find that safe, boring and predictable.
Possibly, but just having more Elves is even safer and more boring. Plus fishmen would probably be easier to devise something that other companies haven’t come up with.
The headgear is right out of Cher’s Vegas show.
I like Cher’s Vegas show. I must be the target audience for this release.
The Octopus reminded me of an enslaver too, which is precisely why I like it personally.
Yeah; the octopus is probably the only flying sea creature in this release that I don’t find looks silly. Not sure why, but a hovering octopus doesn’t seem to break my willing suspension of disbelief in the same manner the others do. :s
I always find Gw miniatures excessive, too big, too many things on them, too much.
They haven’t grown on me I’m afraid. I quite liked them when they announced them. But now I kinda hate them. I don’t know what it is. Maybe they’re too cheesy high fantasy, maybe it’s Sebastian singing “under the sea” In my head whenever I see them, I dunno. Not detracting from the models, which are very well crafted, but I suppose its like trying to find compliments for a Coldplay album – I’m sure they worked super hard on it and they should be super proud of it, but it is the antithesis of everything that is good and… Read more »
Dear god I love these models, and this army. The lore seems really interesting too.
I can’t wait to delve into this.
Models are nice but the dice releasing with them (not shown here) are some of the worst I’ve ever seen. And I love custom dice. They’re even worse than the Nurgle set (which I bought for pure novelty).
I don’t think there is a gaming table that could not use that ship as a terrain feature.
This is the army that seriously has me considering AoS.
What about a space table for X-wing or BFG?
😛
Haha, I would play that. 🙂
Well, except for anything that’s not Fantasy or semi-Historical with a fitting time resemblance. 😉
And there are those fantasy settings this stile doesn’t really fit.
But I get what you mean. ^^ Could even be great for a Dark Souls motivated setting.
Another miss… floaty fish things in the air notwithstanding. Lotann looks like a tea pot, and those elves just don’t look like elves… and don’t get me started on the flyboard cape. What about a giant octopus clambering on to the shore. That I would buy, or a giant conch snail with a howdah, or better still, a faster crab that’s taken up residence in the shell. What about smaller crab cavalry? On the ground of course. Or sea snake cavalry? Also not floating. A goby style lionfish that can move on land? The ship had potential! As an airship,… Read more »
They make me sad. Halfway anyway.
There’s so much potential but these results are on the the worse sides of ecclectic and over the top design approaches. Seriously, GW could have done greatest things with the general backstory construction as basis. And even with certain general design guidelines used here. Alas, nay. They seem to just don’t know what to do with themselves.
I don’t even know what this means. What do you mean they don’t know what to do with themselves? Wjo doesn’t? GW? The Idoneth Deepkin?
Interesting figure’s.
You either love them or hate them… I love them ! 🙂
I love the characters riding the sea horse and the Eidolen as well as all the character in the wizard with an octopus familiar.
I’ve still yet to be won around by the rest of the range but willing to give it a chance.
I said I’d break and get into AoS with a skaven release but I’ll see if that lasts when this faction is fully released.
(I thought Skaven were pretty popular; I’d have thought we’d have seen a release by now).
Not my thing, but you have to give them credit for being creative and doing something very different and new.
Octopus guy is absolutely ridiculous. I like it!
GW are streaming tomorrow on Warhammer TV with a look at the lore, tactics and a deepkin Vs nurgle battle
Not really inspired by this. Over the top nonsense. Yes, fantasy and suspension of disbelief but there’s only so high it can be suspended before tenuously thin string gives way…
Saw a fluff overview which nearly put me to sleep. Fight in water, bribg utterly with them, made by Teclis, something went wrong YAAAAAAAAWN!
The world/universe building for AoS is still little to none existent and lazy at best.
Not a fan… If you guessed XD
I’ll buy that terrain for my salt water aquarium.
Silly. Absurd. Not very warhammering. But I guess that’s Age of Sigmar now.
Outside of Warhammer they are really good models.
Pretty cool. I’ll wait to see the whole range before deciding, but they look good, and I’m loving the proper high fantasy vibe. AoS is finally shedding the last vestiges of potato-sack and skulls WFB had.
I wonder if there will be a re-imagined Teclis model seeing as he is now a God.
