Restoration Games Bring 80’s Classic Fireball Island Back To The Tabletop!
April 4, 2018 by brennon
I must admit that I hadn't heard of Fireball Island: The Curse Of Vul-Kar until this week. But, Restoration Games are now on Kickstarter looking for your support to bring this classic 80's game back to the tabletop and so far they're doing very well!
This game is classically old school and brings to the tabletop a large plastic 'board' which acts as your playspace. You then take on the mantle of adventurers trying to steal treasures from the island of Vulk Kar while also dodging the oncoming fireballs that are rolling up behind you!
The game is still in the prototype stages at the moment but as you can see it is big, glossy, and looks like it would be a lot of silly fun. As a family game for two to four players, you can't expect too many complex rules to come up in this game but they have said that they have increased the strategy element of the game to take away some of the overly punishing bad luck that can hit your adventurers.
Card play replaces the roll and move mechanic (never a good idea) and set collection tactics help your players decide on which treasures they want to snag!
Kickstarter
As mentioned above, this game is now on Kickstarter and below is one of the larger pledges you can go in for which includes some additional expansion content.
Here you'll see the Last Adventurer expansion which gives you an Indiana Jones-esque character to play with during the game and more options. One of the coolest expansions though is the one that adds in the Wreck Of The Crimson Cutlass, an entirely new island/boat to explore with its own marble-based mayhem to throw at you.
Will you be taking a closer look at this one?

Yeah, I played this back in the 80’s, and I loved it then, but I also loved Mousetrap. I wouldn’t play the 80’s game now as it is just randomness in a box, but the designers have spent a lot of time redesigning the game to be more up to date in terms of not only mechanics, but physics as well. The board has been redesigned to allow for better ball flow with less predictable paths. This is literally not your parent’s Fireball Island!
Is that Batman spewing orange marbles? I don’t get it…
