You can now get your hands on the D&D Rules Cyclopedia over on DriveThru RPG. This book, originally published in 1991, is now available in PDF form AND in both softcover and hardcover versions too.

Inside this book, you will find...

All the rules from the D&D boxed set series, including Basic, Expert, Companion, and Masters
Guidelines to develop and play characters from levels 1-36
Comprehensive lists of weaponry and equipment
Expansion rules including optional skills and talents
An overview of the Known World and the HOLLOW WORLD game setting, the official D&D campaign world; and Rules to convert D&D games and characters into AD&D 2nd edition game statistics and back again

...which is pretty awesome when you think about it. It's nice to be able to delve into this old school system and have a go at the rules that started it all. Retro is always fun, right?

I have played “Advanced” D&D and say there is a reason why we are on the 5th edition. Like why would an Elf only be able to take so many levels of fighter? Some of the crunch that was taken out in later editions was interesting. Like being a Lord of bit of land. But for the most part I think its best to leave it in the past. It also could be that the D&D I had for it was just a pain.

i like the fact the long running RPGs like D&D and CofC do this

I was a nice fast and filthy little system that was easy to learn and lots of fun to play, the D&D known world with all it’s Gazeters and what not were so much fun . It was not technically my first RPG (that was magenta basic D&D box and Cyan Expert D&D box then they rebooted) but it was my second. Loved this.
