Let’s Play: Star Wars Legion Core Box Battle
February 12, 2018 by dignity
It's the moment we've all been waiting for! We're playing Star Wars Legion baby! Created by Fantasy Flight Games.
Click Here For More Star Wars
Within the studio, Justin will be playing as the Rebels, led by Skywalker against Gerry's Dark Side Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers.
In this game we've taken it upon ourselves to play a beginners 500 point game, tune in soon this week where we'll be playing 600 and a further 800 point game to boost the mayhem on the board.
We're also playing with some of the fantastic terrain from Battle Kiwi. Plus the beautiful mat from Game Mat EU.
Who's side are you on?

What is this? 28mm Star Wars Tabletop? On BoW? Who could have seen this coming? My money was on you guys sitting an entire week in the Courthouse. Drinking pints and waxing lyrical about all things Star Wars. Fun fact that picture included @avernos in my head. Of course it does when there are pints around.
Btw all my envy (in the most positive meaning) is on you Gerry. Looks like you’re having fun. So enjoy, we other mortals still have to wait. And me even longer, as I need those B1 vs Gungan armies.
I was pushing for the bar, but sadly overruled.;)
As if you would do that!
that was a early morning surprise…
Oooh star wars Legion. What an unexpected treat, I wonder how it will pan out? Alas I’m in work so I won’t be able to watch it until later. That battle kiwi terrain looks fantastic on the board
So jealous…… I look forward to watching this after work 😀 .
I didn’t see this coming.
Me neither
I’m shocked by this… shocked I tell ya!
You could at least have given some warning or dropped some hints that this was imminent! 😉
I’m both excited and undecided about this game. I’ll definitely be getting it but would like to hear more about the list building mechanics.
My hope is that they (eventually) follow the three faction root that they have in X-Wing: Rebel, Imperial and Scum… though how useful Jabba would be on the table top would be debatable. Still in the legends universe (no longer cannon) there was such a thing as Hutt Battle Armour so who knows ( http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Hutt_battle_armor ).
Will Battle Kiwi be at the Adepticon release? If so, I’m gonna need a third mortgage.
I think you got the definition of when a unit receives an Order incorrect. Form FFG’s website “When issuing orders, you simply choose units within Range 3 of your commander and place those units’ order tokens next to them. ” So that is different from when they activate. When Justin used “My Ally is the Force”, “This command card can issue orders to any two trooper units, and when those orders are issued, your units also gain a dodge token.” – again a quote from FFG’s website. I think Justin would have ended up with a few more troopers at… Read more »
Yeap we correct it in later games. But their site wasn’t available when we filmed these.
I think you did brilliantly, didnt you have to learn it on the train or did I read that wrong on another thread?
Looks like a fun game. Not bad for an FFG starter set, actually quite playable out of the box.
Well, you just sold me on this. I was on the fence but it actually looked like a fun system from this play through. Looking forward to the rest of the content you have planned. Keep up the great work gents.
Was this game using nothing except the core box, or were you using parts from expansions or a second core box?
Core only
Was the 500pt side a single core box?
Yup
Hey guys, I know its a lets play and game mistakes are bound to happen. But I figured I might be able to clarify a few mistakes. The first card that Justin plays in round 1 should only allow for 1 unit to be assigned an activation token. The rest should have been drawn at random. Also you have one extra figure then you should per squad. A basic squad is 4 figures, with an extra trooper card and specialist card being added/purchased you would have 6 not 7 troops. Also during the first round Jerry’s card should have allowed… Read more »
Good catch. I am hoping that FFG releases the rule book in PDF form the week of the in store demos. tbh, I will be making plenty of mistakes my first few rounds myself.
Google has not been my friend today, where have you been able to get hold of the rules?
Yeap we caught those for subsequent games. That’s the joy of having a new game chucked at you with an NDA and practically no prep time. Also the rules refer to additional online rules but alas none of that was available for our games
With a new game AND a NDA, i’d probably burst a blood vessel and keel over mid game….
I got the invite to come up to film the day before. So there was a lot of learning on the fly. Not ideal but I blame everyone else XD
As is only fit and correct to do so sir 😀 😀 .
One thing the video confirmed for me is that I want a second set of dice and movement templates if I am playing with a single core set which I will do at home.
God yes. Later on there are incoming games and the lack of dice fries my head. You’re having to keep track of different levels of hit, while re-rolling some dice to make up for the shortfall then re-rolling dice for abilities and then trying to work out how many actual hits were inflicted. The templates I could live with one set. But the dice, practically a must buy
Having to buy extra dice for an FFG game is a given, a sure way to boost their revenue on a games release, anybody would think that they didn’t give you enough dice on purpose :/
Mistakes aside, I’m really enjoying the lets play, I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the rest of the week!
right im sold, but can i please forward a motion to remove Justin of his official geek card? i’m sure we all fondly remember the day we heard Carrie Fisher utter the immortal line “Obi Wan Kenobi, i need yer help!”. 😀
I am not a fan of 28mm scale for games that are going to use vehicles. This will be true here for those of us who don’t have a 6×4 table to play on. The AT-ST and T-47 expansions which are coming.
Maybe we will see this in 15mm :p
This game is at the top of my “Next buy” list. I can’t wait and as I know two guys at my local club who want to be Rebels, I can be pretty much guarenteed a game as I want to play the Empire.
Question: Not sure if this has been answered. The Force Choke card says that it can be used against an Enemy trooper, however @avernos was using it to kill Stormtroopers and gaining additional activations. Is this a rule from the activation card?
Cheers guys. Looking forward to more content.
Yes it’s a command card that grants the ability not his force powers. I didn’t actually get any force powers until later games as the rebs seem to be under costed so I burnt through mine before getting to add toys 🙂
Cool. Thanks for the clarification. 🙂
That … was an epic video. I won’t spoil the end for people who haven’t watched it yet. Probably my favorite Let’s Play since the Justin on the Eastern Front, or Justin’s Dwarves vs. Undead in KoW. I love the after-effects editing … like @avernos effortlessly deflecting blaster bolts with waves of his hand! 😀 😀 😀
Cheers Jim, it’s a lot of fun and after this rocky starting game we got to grips with it quickly enough and by the end of filming….. well people will have to wait and see the other games. The battle kiwi terrain helped we were able to change up the table at the drop of a troopers helmet
I pre-ordered two starter boxes plus all the expansions and extra dice. I can’t wait to get my stuff in house and get started building.
I’ll be playing as Empire mostly, but will play Rebel when forced to. 🙂
I can’t wait till the non-Jedi/Sith commanders enter play. I’m looking forward to battles in the style of “Rogue One”.
Quick question for the BoW hosts that have played this already. Can you have an effective game play right now, if you leave out the Jedi/Sith?
You need a commander. At the moment that seems to be Luke and vader, although I’m sure others are coming. There is no reason you can’t drop them and nominate a commander from your troops, that’s what you have to do anyway if you lose your commanders during the game. Hope that makes sense
General Veers will be a first quarter release, Leia will be a second quarter release. It means waiting a bit, unless you go with what @avernos suggests and pick out a trooper to lead.
There is a Veers card with the AT ST but he’s an upgrade not a commander card
That’s good to know. I’d been looking at the FFG blurb for his ( and Leia’s ) Commander expansion.
General Veers is the first non-jedi commander coming out along with General Leia.
It’s Star Wars, i’m in on this hook, line and sinker 😀 .
I was thinking a 2 core box purchase would be ok ? F****** Shiny Syndrome will be the death of me, let alone my wallet……
it would be how I’d do it, or find another victim and get a box each and then swap the minis.
Nor sure i could share, i get very Gollum like when it comes to mini’s, they’re all my precious, no-one ele’s, just mine.
SPOILERS
love how towards the end Justin plays with his beard having been caught in the open thinking ‘you flipping dingle Gerry’ but saying ‘harsh’. When Gerry then shoots at him he completely misses… who’s the dingle now hahaha. we’ve all been there and had the same reaction hahaha
So true, so, so true 🙂 .
Am watching this week with interest. I was pretty excited for this game but I’m now in two minds.
I’m keen to see whether, with experience, the game gets out of the way of itself and let’s you play Star Wars. That’s where X-Wing is so good. This is possibly looking like a lot of complex dice and cards.
