Same basing as I described yesterday
Blackened battlefield. Black and brown base using sand just using the good old @lawnor technique mixing the sand in with the PVA when applying it., bits of broken up brick or metal but a must is barbed wire. The biggest thing, is getting across that it is grimdark future not future punk or dystopian wars or anything like that, that it is 40k, which of course means.
A lot of skulls.
I am really looking forward to seeing what you do
Seconded!
Grimdark all the way. In contrast to the flash looking uniforms 😎
go muddy John. i think the force has the perfect feel of a napoleonic force mowing in to a ww1 trenches force with a 40k theme. so i think go for a muddy trenches look maybe a bit of wood on the cavalry bases and maybe a couple of tufts but go glossy mud. this would also go well in to weathering.
MUDDDDDDD
Have a look at Lady Butler’s painting called Scotland Forever! It is the charge of the Scots Greys. The battlefield (rightly or wrongly) is depicted as being a reddish brown, with some tracks of grass.
Why I say this is that your cavalry just remind me of that painting, and think mud, earth and grass is very Napoleonic.
A contrasting colour to make the troops stand out.
I don’t want this project to end!
that sound ominous, are you letting me down gently.
seriously though there’re half a dozen ways of pulling off the basing i’m sure you’ll nail it which ever way you go.
I’d say either really dark as above or really light (ie ice and/or broken snow) to contrast with the colour of the minis and frame the blue, red and gold.
I’d like to see either wet mud or autumnal/ first snow of winter look John. Don’t go urban or desert unless you are happy to splash the pigments and dust everything down. I’m loving the look of the washed figures, the grim dark look is just what I love to do with my historical painting. You can always highlight up certain colours to make them stand out from a distance. Keep going mate, this is an inspirational Vlog.
They look snapping! One day I’d like to have a friendly game versus my Volisgrad Russian Imperial Guard. It’ll be Russian gegen Prussian!
