Star Wars RPG Celebrates 30 Years Of Gaming In A Galaxy Far, Far Away
January 25, 2018 by dracs
Fantasy Flight Games are celebrating thirty years of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game with the new 30th Anniversary Edition now up for pre-order.
This new edition is a faithful recreation of the much-loved West End Games original, featuring both the rulebook and a sourcebook, filled with all the aliens, vehicles etc. you need to adventure in the famous galaxy far, far away.
In a preview, Fantasy Flight took a look inside the pages of the rulebook at some of the character templates available.
There are twenty-four in total, including concepts like "Failed Jedi", "Bounty Hunter", "Arrogant Noble", or "Alien Student of the Force".
Some of these templates are a great place to start when coming up with backstory and it is especially good to see the opportunities to engage with the force players have, despite the lack of Jedi at this time.
Judging from the preview images when the edition was first announced last year, Fantasy Flight have paid careful attention to recreating the original books as closely as possible.
The original Star Wars Roleplaying Game is one which I often hear fond reminiscences of, so the chance for both new and old players to get their hands on it again is great to see.
Do you have any fond memories of this game?

one of the most important and influential rpgs of all time, certainly the most influential in sci fi.
had this on pre order for a while, just couldn’t resist.
love the fact Pablo has handed a copy to every writer and director working on STAR WARS.
I’ll be picking this up, it’s important for people to remember that game kept Star Wars alive, and even things added by the guys at West End have became canon
Great game, hopefully someone at FFG will crack the spine themselves and see rpgs aren’t about weird cards and strange dice ;P
2nd rpg I ever owned and also ran. Damn good, and one of the best at the time.
I still have my first edition, two copies of second, and one second edition revised and expanded, plus lots of adventures and companion books. We played the fool out of it back in the day and I’d gladly play it again.
this is a cert , to sit alongside the original and the fan based version which I still play the hell out of.
FFG , this is a RPG , not one that needs your own dice!
Got this on order from my flgs
In a cupboard far far away these books sit….
I still have my original copy “somewhere” but I preordered via my flgs as well. It’s a really great system and better than many more “modern” rule sets. I am tempted to retry running the FFG Star Wars campaigns using these rules. Our Edge of the Empire game fizzled pretty quickly as the gimmicky dice system wore thin real fast.
It’s good to see classic edition get re-release. Great stuff.
Hell yes, I still have fond memories of this game. I still have these two (they’ve survived because they were in hardback), but my Imperial Sourcebook and Rebel Alliance Sourcebook have long since disintegrated (was able to find them on .pdf a few years later). Creature / Alien sourcebooks and Strikeforce: Shantipole lost to the mists of time.
Its my favorite RPG. Easy to teach. Everyone have a concept what it is about. Had so much fun with this with so many gamers. Still have all books except the LRPGs ones and some of the adventure journals, which i was unable the get.
Favourite ones are the one painted from Gosset: Platts Starport Guide and the Pirates and Privateers books.
Favorite Adventure: Mission to Liana (it is so good)
Its so easy to get so much rich source material out there:

Man, i still have a link on my desktop to all my downloads 😉
Personally I adore the Rebel Spec Force Sourcebook. Just loaded up with info for running commando-based campaigns, and has lots of cool stuff on the troops of the Imperial Navy, Army, and Stormtrooper legions.
(I would say that, just for aesthetics, I prefer the 2nd Edition WEG book. Some gorgeous artwork in there.)
