First Warhammer 40,000 Adeptus Custodes Releases Hit This Weekend
January 15, 2018 by brennon
The first big set of releases for Warhammer 40,000 and the Adeptus Custodes hit this coming weekend. Games Workshop previewed some of what you've got to look forward to in their Warhammer Community blog.
Leading from the front we will have the mighty Trajann Valoris here. As characters go in power armour this fellow is looking rather splendid. I like what they've done with the armour, which doesn't appear to have gone over the line of looking too busy. That weapon is a thing of beauty too I'd say.
Ancient Armoured Warriors
There is also the new set of models in plastic for the Allarus Custodians. This set allows you to either make a unit of the Terminators to act as Trajann's honour guard perhaps...
...or maybe work them into more characters for your force. As well as allowing you to make these, and I hesitate to call them this, regular troops, you can also make yourself a Shield Captain too.
The box also makes another character choice for you as well with the banner waving and morale-boosting Vexillus Praetor who will most likely fill a similar role to the one the Ancient plays in a Primaris Space Marine force.
Now we've got a better look at the design of these models close up I actually quite like how they've come together. The Adeptus Custodes models previously have felt a little disjointed and unrealistic but I think they've done a good job with this plastic kit to make sure they skirt the line quite nicely, much in the same way as with the character models.
Credit where credit is due, Games Workshop has got some nice toy soldiers here. The real problem for me, therefore, lies in customisation and personalisation.
While of course there's nothing stopping you painting these fellows a different colour - would it feel wrong to not paint them in gold? They should be quite the doddle to paint which is an upside!
What do you think of these upcoming releases?

I really like the character model at the top, not sure about the standard troops but then I’ve never been a fan of gold armour. I know gold is the correct colour but it would be interesting to see alternative schemes to bring out the details.
Not my cup of tea, but quite nice models indeed. Fingers crossed more armies than just the Imperium get cool, new stuff like this. With all the mystery and hype building up to this really I was kind of hoping for something more interesting than a Custodes release.
Many editions ago, I did a count, and realized that half of the factions were Imperial.
They’ve been expanding with more minor factions, but I think they’ve more or less kept that ratio.
I bet they keep updating with the Imperials getting every second codex.
They do look nice, But not sure I’ll be needing any of them, dont really need another army!
The jetbikes do look great and would be tempting, but who knows.
I was hoping for Lion or Russ when they teased the announcement so to me this was a bit meh…
While those models actually look good I can’t help but to wonder why Adeptus Custodes that’s another Imperial faction released after another Chaos faction and after this one there is another Chaos release when Xenos only have two codices so far (three if you count Genestealer Cult). Look I am Imperial player but I feel bad for Xenos players for having to see they factions ignored. Also I am not even sure if Adeptus Custodes should had even taken priority over faction that still don’t have they own Codices.
It does seem as though GW got people’s hopes up for something they thought would be more interesting than Custodes. I’m also with you, in that I’m a little tired of the focus on Space Marines and Chaos, although I think the Cadians are starting to show their age (wouldn’t mind seeing them redone, or another regiment getting a plastic release), while I’d be all for Sisters getting a release as well. That said, this seems to be a relatively small release (the terminators, the jetbikes and the characters), and in terms of collecting, I’m more interested in factions that… Read more »
The releases are nice, but I can’t help daydreaming of Enslavers, Hrud, Demiurg and Chaos Xenos….
All of the evidence had been pointing to a Custodes release (long rumored, and virtually solidified with the first leak from the Jan White Dwarf saying “Next Month: Lots of gold!”) It is only natural that there be so many Imperial and Chaos releases, they are the majority of the factions. The most important thing anyone should be pulling from this is that GW is keeping up the pace of Codices, with Daemons, Custodes, Thousand Sons all in the first two months of the year. They show no sign of slowing down. I don’t get why people are getting so… Read more »
Is it a three way split- Imperium/Chaos/Xenos? I think it is more even if we look at it as a two way split (Imperium/Other).
With Age of Sigmar, they seem to focus a lot on Chaos and the Stormcasts. I figured that they trying to emphasize the unique elements of their setting, but maybe they’re just loving the Chaos right now.
I read or saw somewhere that GW have noted people feeling a that the all gold look is a little dull so to speak and have given scope for other factions. Appratnely there is one in a predominantly black with gold and another white with gold. I guess all this will be covered in the coming codex.
Look at the pictures from the people who attended the New Years Warhammer Open day. There’s one in white and one in gold.
Genuine question: I know the fluff’s moved on now, but what changed so they can now leave the Emp’s side?
I believe that’s part of what is in the codex (i.e. the fluff isn’t fully known yet); to quote the Warhammer community article
“Inside, you’ll find out things about the Custodes you’ve never seen before, from unique shield companies (such as the Shadowkeepers, who guard the Black Cells), to just why, after so long, the Adeptus Custodes are joining the battle for the fate of the 41st Millennium in full”
(money wise, I believe the current Custodes stuff has sold very well)
Gotcha. I’ll keep an eye out then. Cheers!
More power armour in a different colour. Meh.
There also seems to be little variation in their poses, from a distance I’d think everything will look rather samey?
the posh marines are looking good.
smurfs, now in gold flavor, sprinkled with more op.
nothing special to see here, move along.
Your name makes this comment funny.
The details look nice and do make power armor look nicer compared to the topical marine but I personally have no desire for them.
I know this is heresy but these guys would make pretty cool looking chaos marines. 🙂
I like the character, shoulder pads on the terminators don’t fit with the overall ornate look to me. Personally not an army that I will rush to grab, although I do love the bikes.
Still rumours are march to june will be xenos fun, ending with an Ork spectacular – if that is valid or not no idea but heard it from a couple of source now or it could be tinterweb echo chamber.
