Adeptus Custodes Bring The Emperor’s Might To Warhammer 40,000
January 8, 2018 by brennon
Games Workshop revealed this weekend that the Adeptus Custodes are coming to Warhammer 40,000 with a proper Codex packed with more choices for your army.
As well as new rules, new options, new tactics and more they will also be joined by new units including some cool looking plastic kits.
We know, for example, just by looking at this image and the trailer above that we're going to be getting some new plastic Terminators for the Adeptus Custodes as well as characters like Captain-General Trajann Valoris and even some vehicles too.
While it's good that we're getting a cool new force to throw into our Warhammer 40,000 I can't help but echo the thoughts of a friend of mine on the matter. Yes, it's cool to show them on the battlefield but does it break the mystique of them a little?
The Adeptus Custodes have always been a force to be reckoned with, beyond normal Space Marines and deadly in their battle tactics - now with them on the tabletop, for someone who is a bit of a narrative fiend, suddenly we're going to be seeing them cut down by regular Orks and small arms fire from a Penal Legion?
Of course, gameplay has to be balanced, and they could never really do the Adeptus Custodes justice in reality (much like with regular Space Marines) but in some ways, maybe this is a little bit of a shame.
Thousand Sons
Arrayed against them always are the forces of Chaos and with that, we get news that there is also a Codex for Thousand Sons coming soon too...
Contained within we'll find more rules and options for your traitor legions who are wielding powerful psychic abilities on the battlefield. The Thousand Sons have always been a fascinating Legion to consider, very different in style from most of the other traitors AND with some awesome ways to paint them in their scarab-blue armour.
I'm sure many folks will be glad to see some additional rules coming their way.
What do you think of the news?

While those new models that they are showing are solid it’s still let down that we are getting another Imperial faction for 40k and not even one that people have been wanting. Based on teaser text I was personally hoping Necrons as it was something that Necron character would say and Xenos factions do need more love.
I reckon Necrons will be here within the next couple of months based on the fact they got virtually nothing in the chapter approved book. GW did say that the amount of stuff an army gets in chapter approved is based on how close their codex is from release. Getting nothing would seem to suggest it’s on its way quite soon.
Not exactly a show stopper were just getting the full menu instead of the Chef’s special’s?
I was hoping the big announcement was something else but Im kind of looking forward to this now. The jetbikes, characters, and heavier terminators look so cool.
Better dust off mine and start painting again.
“Hoping that it was something else”?? Me too .. I was hoping it was the return of Squats … *deep sigh and goes back to his anti-40k grudge.
Oh they do look nice .. I’ll give them that , and I like the Custodes lore ……. but a grudge is a grudge
I have always liked the Custodes concept and these miniatures look great.
I suppose the question is does 40k need another army? From GW pov they’ve done the hard work already so why not?
More choice is great aye – and from a die-hard 40k fan’s viewpoint seeing more models of what you’ve read about is always cool, won’t deny that.
I agree with you 100%, Ben. These models are pretty glorious, and to some degree, it’s awesome to see them stomping around the battlefield. However, that old adage comes to mind. “If you stat it, they will kill it.” After 20+ years of my friends and I discussing them, and how awesome they must be, they’re going to come down to the table with maybe an extra wound and a pip of toughness or so over a space marine. They’re going to be dying in droves, now. I would have preferred maybe a special character get released, in one of… Read more »
The bikes are stunningly nice, put the forgeworld ones in the shade. Others are solid sculpts. If the Grav tanks and forgeworld dreadnoughts make it into 40k could be tempted, eventually but it’s not a must grab by miles.
Would rather have xenos codices though, I am hoping the delay is for cool new kits.
Adeptus Custodes and Stormcast models are looking more and more like each other. Would have like to see something a bit more interesting than “if you though Space Marines were good, now buy Primaris Marines, but if you thought Primaris Marines were good, now buy Adeptus Custodes”. The amount of power creep that’s been pushed out by GW these days is faster than most people can paint them.
Sorry for being grumpy 🙁
If you thought Space Marines were expensive, now buy Primaris Marines, but if you thought Primaris Marines were expensive, now buy Adeptus Custodes.
A ten man squad of troop choices costs 45€ for Primaris, 90 € for Custodes. If the people are paying this prices, GW would be dumb not to make a Codex for them. Yes they also costs the double points, but i doubt the production cost is also doubled. It is not mainly about power creep, it is mostly about price creep in my opinion.
Yes, i am also grumpy.
Prices of models are not necessarily dictated by production costs but by development costs vs number of units they will ship. If a unit is incredibly powerful then the number people can take will be limited by high points. Limiting the number of units a player can take in turn drives lower sales as people won’t generally buy more than they need. People buying less of a unit drives lower sales which drives the price of the models up.
Thing is, maybe more people would buy them if they were not so over expensive. Many of us have limit of what we are willing to pay from models that we buy no matter how good those would look or how good option those would be for our armies. Not everyone wants to pay asked price for those models so that hurts sales even more than how many you can use. Some of most insane pricing that I have seen from GW belongs to Blood Knights (5 models for 80€) and Primaris characters (1 model that’s not even big for… Read more »
It’s not a question of how many people will buy them but how many units each person will buy. Because the game itself limits how many you can field compared to other models, the sales demand will be naturally lower and so they need to increase the sales cost to ensure the development work pays for itself/achieves a profit target based on the up front investment made by GW – and every product they make will be held to similar targets. If they charged less at retail they probably wouldn’t sell that many more because players simply don’t need as… Read more »
I also think that most 40k players are likely to have a limit on what they will pay for an army rather than how much they will pay for an individual model.
It is a question of both. If you double the number of persons, that buy them, or if you double the number of units each person buys, it has the same effect. I also think the prices are not arbitrary. But do you really think, that is how GW calculates their selling prices? I think demand is a way bigger factor for them. The relation of development cost to numbers of selled units only gives the minimum, they need to stay above. If demand would not drive the price up it would mean they sell for instance more drukhari flyers… Read more »
I would actually go so far as to say I don’t THINK that’s how they calculate their prices, I am fairly certain that is exactly how they calculate prices and have done so for a long time. Way back in 2009, Empire Great Swords were almost double the cost of State troops despite the two boxes containing the same number of figures and the state troops having arguably more options. It’s not just about whether a particular item makes profit, it’s about the profit margin. An item for which you do not require as many of to fill an army… Read more »
I’m not usually a fan of Space Marines; I prefer regular foot sloggers to genetically enhanced super humans. And yet somehow I love the Custodes.
Bikes are very cool. And technically, they aren’t Space Marines. *Dodges for cover*
These guys were hinted at coming back in force in the Dark Imperium novel, and it makes sense to be seeing them on the battlefields now, in my humble opinion.
They’re Space Marines+ They’re everything that I hate about Space Marines dialled up to 11. And yet somehow I love them.
