I love how long the pennant pole is, you need to get some over the top look in there to tie it in, in my opinion anyway.
I think if the force isn’t looking quite right, chuck a chainsword in there. Nothing says 40K like a chainsword.
Looking good so far, I like the pole and pennant. With it being so long though it might be worth trying to find something to put on the bottom of the pole to look like a counter balance, I would think the bottom off a chain/powersword hilt would do the job.
If you are worried about them looking 40k enough maybe a few bits of Tau or Orks trampled into the final basing would sort that.
You are so right on the lance pole! And yes, basing is something popping up more in the comments, so I’ll keep that in mind too 🙂
I think everything looks great so far. Maybe add a rifle or pistol bag to the cav units.
True, I will need to “explore” our bits boxes (yes we have many) more over the coming days
Looks very effective. I would have perhaps not glued the pennant on now and rather painted off miniature before attaching at the end. I think what with it being paper and not overly rigid, it’ll be a right pain to paint.
Alternatively, and thinking about it what I would have done, is create some printed pennants or even some transfers. I like my insignia, banners etc to look uniform. Then attached it all at the end after everything else was painted.
I am wanting to make transfers. So I would like to add them too 😀 The Pennant itself is folded over the pole, superglued in place then PVA’d to hold it together and fix its “pose” I think after primer and paint it would be -fairly- rigid enough to paint. But all good valid points you make sir 😀
I’m going to reserve the right to say ‘I told you so’ when you get around to painting the pennants! 🙂
I approve this message! 😉 I think the lance is the right length for the look that you are going for. The blade looks great. It looks sci-fi and exotic, yet its function is clear and obvious, but the bit is not so common that I immediately recognized where it came from. The pennant looks great as well. The length, width and motion all look spot on for the figure. For the explosive tip on the lance, the ork stikkbomm and the melta-bomb bits are both candidates but I don’t think that they “read” right as lance-head. You’d be forever… Read more »
I think it’s looking great! I think the sword/lance tip works well, as does the pennant. I’d be tempted to take off the large pouches and keep the sides of the cavalryman clear. Only hang the pouches off the back of him or the saddle. Just my thoughts ; )
Maybe I’ll change the larger pouches to be more like saddle bags?
Like it. For me the sword lance is a bit long but I see I’m the only one that thinks so.
I would put at least a laspistol on them.
For the infantry I would greenstuff or stick a lasgun barel on the guns. Make it look more 40k.
Maybe get some of those etched brass small imperial eagles to put on the hats and/or pouches.
Love this poject.
I mean Etched brass small imperial eagles from Forge World.
And try to get one extra figure per squad that you can confert to a sergeant with a laspistol and a chainsword to make the squads look really 40k Imperial guard.
Have a look to see if you have any Militarum Tempestus bits hanging around the kit has a gun in a holster sheath that may be good?
Looking great so far Johnlyons! I think the pennant and lance gives it a real sense of movement and with a whole unit done in a similar style will be a true sight to see. I would also agree on adding some more stowage/weapons. Once the lances break or get stuck in during battle riders would drop it and draw swords/pistols. I know the command spur has some options for las-pistols and cyber hands with power sword. Can’t wait to see where this goes, I ‘ve been holding out getting back into 40K but this series and some GW stuff… Read more »
honestly I find it too long. If I would do the army…No flag just a sharp edge.
For the pennant I think it’s too long. It would make a great banner but if I think about how they lower their lances to strike I would say the pennant will get in the way of at least the horse’s legs… or face.
The pouches look good but I would suggest to take the Space Marine pouches as saddle bags and the smaller ones for the riders. I think the SM pouches are too big for a normal guy.
I like the pennant length no issue there from my perspective, although they are definitely much larger than my normal Krieg pennants on their horses. But given this is a different regiment I think it makes it stand out. Looking at the blade if you wanted to make a few of them with explosive tips all I would do is cut the sword on both sides at a slight angle making the tip be the bottom part of the first hole you see in the sword. That hilt would make a great explosive tip. If you look at the actual… Read more »
Looking awesome I would print out some pennants on card with a more elaborate design and then coat them with a varnish and a wash, saves a lot of hassle painting them later, otherwise paint them before attaching them to the lance. Add some chain swords and maybe a mounted psyker or priest
In the old US Cav of the late 1800’s look you could add a rifle case on a few of the horses to add a bit more scifi to the historical look. I do like pole arms with the pennants and I am sure with a little highlighting and glow effect they will come off super cool.
What I’ll probably do is add more to the unit leaders so they stand out more as a centre piece of each unit in their own right 🙂
looks good john.
I guess it should never get in the way of cool, but my first thought was “that will be a devil to store with a lance that long”. I like the idea of the cool looking extra blade added to the end of the lance, but perhaps the total height could be dropped a little to compensate? With the relatively large bases on the cavalry minis I think you have a great opportunity to allow the basing to set the 40k period. A sand /flock /stones covered base can give you a fast brilliant scheme, but the minis still seem… Read more »
Since these are pony size calv, I wouls shorten the blade on the end of the lance.
It looks great! I think everything (pole, pennant etc) needs to be quite exaggerated – that’s makes it 40K instead of “just” Napoleonic.
You could consider changing the horses to make them 40K. Giving them implants and such might make them too steampunk, but what about kevlar armour cladding (at least on the front)? Or maybe some updates to the reins or the bridle? Possible something to enhance their physical performance?
Just some ideas. I love this project!
I think the pennant is cool, but he could do with a las/auto/stub pistol on him somewhere or lasgun. Cant remember what these guys are armed with.
I think one in every ten should have the pennant as a standard bearer and the rest should have shorter lances without the flag flowing from it.
Also very fancy bases with razor wire and muck and stuff would rock.
Sergeant would look great with a chunky plasma pistol or power sword.
I think the pole is fine as it is unlikely to be transported from BoW HQ. I am not sure about your pouch set up. The really long ones on his right side seem to be too big to me and out of scale with the model, the ones on the bedroll work nicely, like the grenades both in scale and positioning. Not a fan of the ones up his back due to their positioning but understand the shape limits attachment, if they could be placed diagonally like a bandolier that’s been slung on the back for riding I think… Read more »
Hi John, Like @petdrb I think the blade is slightly too long, or the shaft is too thin – proportionally something is off there, and I think that the pendant can then be made to match.
Otherwise fabby!
It’s a shame you don’t have more time for the project. Given more time, I would have used, or at least mixed in, some more exotic type of creatures for them to ride. That would scream, not Napoleonic.
That said, given time constraints, it’s looking great.
The point of the project is for it to have a Napoleonic type of feel – personally, I want it to retain a gritty realism of an army ‘out of its time’ 🙂
calvary is perfect to attach lasrifles Jhn, it will definetelly 40k them up a much more,
Having read the comments I think adding pistols to the riders is a great idea. The odd skull ico. Wouldn’t go amiss in a 40k setting. Adding an imperial eagle or two atop or along the laces or sergeants would definately make them easily identified as a Guard army, while still see it Napoleonic
