Community Spotlight: Scratch Building Rome, An Imperial Assault & Inquisitor Covenant
December 8, 2017 by crew
Another week has passed and the community in the Hobby & Painting forums continue to impress us with their ingenious creations!
Scorecards at the ready, let's go!
Inquisitor Covenant by irishsteve
Beginning with the amazing Inquisitor Covenant, taken by a janky iPad camera. It goes to say that great talent can't be compromised by shoddy camera work 😉
The tones and highlighting on the model, particularly the sheen of the great sword is beautifully blended. Plus while it may seem like simple freehand work on the cloak, the level of detail and precision is impeccable, how you managed to keep those lines straight between folds of cloth is astonishing.
The subtle colour changes through the base and chipping of the armour, not to mention the leather tearing from the book cover is on point!
Building Rome by hutch
Next up, hutch has been preparing well for what we assume is the new Gangs of Rome game coming soon, this beautiful terrain piece is up there, comparable with Sarissa the detail and use of poly-filla to plaster the walls.
What's equally amazing about this little slice of Rome, is that it's nicely interchangeable to suit what kind of board you wish to play on, whether it have a water feature in the center or a vegetable patch on the side for those green fingers who live nearby.
hutch has even more great pieces of terrain to show off on his personal blog, as well as our forums.
Imperial Assault by fourtytwo
Oh boy, I've been watching this forum topic all week now and I'm continually impressed each time I visit.
What I love about these models is the lack of basing, I feel that lacking any basing really impacts the look and contrast of the paint schemes on the models. The beautifully painted high tone and contrasting colours makes them look like they've popped right out of a graphic novel or animated movie.
Shown here on the Fett armour even the chipping on the armour is not detracted from the detail or contrast of the bright colours, the small details are equally rewarded with grace and pristine.
If you fancy getting your hobby fingers out and showing off your newest paint job, terrain piece or even greatest gaming achievement, we want to know about it!

So many stunning mini’s, Boba is my pick from the button winners 😀 .
Yeah I agree about those bases on the IA minis. They really help those great paintjobs to stand out, especially when they are placed on the colourful map tiles.
I didn’t base mine either because there’s such a variety if map tiles in the game that you simply can’t pick a scheme that will work universally. I ultimately went with grey in the end and did some scenic bases for the characters
Great job – those Imperial Assault minis are outstanding! And the Inquisitor model – just beautiful.
And I am always a sucker for good looking terrain (mostly because I have no idea how you guys do it!).
Wow these are 3 of the best buttons I’ve seen
The star wars guys have amazing colours through out Jabba the Hut looks amazing, much wet blending there? Great finished product!!
I absolutely love the face @irishsteve, so much character in there you’ve done the sculpt justice
And the Rome terrain is great on its own the fact it’s all interchangable turns the whole thing up to 11
Congrats guys, great great way to end the year!
Love these. A photo-finish as usual, but the Roman villa edges it for me (possibly due to the excitement around the Gangs of Rome bootcamp).
ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL WORK 😀
I am really looking forward to reviewing the Inquisitor in the WAYPN video tonight and hutch’s scratch build is legitimately amazing I am always amazed by scratch builds but my god it looks pretty freaking professional, and those Imperial Assult minis ohhh damn, do you know hard those minis are to work with??
Well done everyone well deserved 🙂
Great stuff guys. I don’t really like picking favourites but I do love a good Kitbash and Inquisitor Covenant is a superb example of that. But you know, scratch building scenery is a dying art so it’s good to see people keeping the flag flying. And of course being a bit of a Star Wars fan, those Imperial Assault models are really ticking a lot of boxes. So I think they’re all my favourites
again stunning work everyone love the Inquisitor the starwars figures look fabulous n the villa would make any table look brilliant.
the imperial assault miniatures have a great clone wars feel to them. always felt a clean paint job and not to many colour transitions was the way to go with them. really nice work.
the inquisitor is the sort of thing i would love to be sitting in my display cabinet
Wow I’m stoked at the nomination and thanks for all the kind comments.
I really really like the Star Wars stuff and they would make a fantastic force in games like AE Bounty and the like. I just love the different Alien races. It really is a cracking looking force.
The inquisitor is also excellent. The contrast of the front of the base and the model on it is excellent and really compliment each other.
Wonderful work, congratulations to all the winners.
All good, but the Imperial Assault minis are just really GOOD!
😉
Holy crap!! I got a button?!! Awesome sauce and thanks a million guys. Covenant was a fun one to work on and try out a few new things. Cheers again lads 😀
I got a spotlight button – now that is a pleasant surprise, even though I don’t yet fully know what that means, I guess it’s a good thing. 😀 Many thanks, guys, and congrats to irishsteve and hutch – amazing work!
