An interesting listen. Almost mirrors the way I got into wargaming around the same time periods as Richard minus the bit about becoming a successful games designer
That was brilliant.
Great insights.
Not sure I have a game in me, but would definitely hold to the same ‘playing the period, not the rules’ ethos if I did.
I got given some napoleonics minis for my Christmas. Bought the Sharp Practice pdf end of last year. Can’t wait to get some games in.
Great stuff – I have really been enjoying the Too Fat Lardies stuff lately
Great stuff. I love the fact that Sharpe Practice is described as watching a cinematic event unfold, and control over your forces is “less important”. It matches the way the game has come across in the Let’s Play videos.
Is there anyone who got started in the 60s-70s who doesn’t owe a huge thank you to Donald Featherstone?
Nope Him and Stuart Asquith, Tony Bath, Paddy Griffith and Jack Scruby
Bloody Hell I forgot Charles Grant
That’s quite an omission 😀
That was a great chat, gonna have to pick up Dux Britanniarum I think.
The Summer and Christmas Specials Rich mentioned as always worth picking up really good value for money
a fab video, the toy braking years o to be young and daft again.
Great chat, Richard Clarke has been a breath of fresh air in our hobby. Their approach to gaming is where I think most of us try and inspire to and it goes to show as a historical wargamer you can have fun within it. Great job again on the series with rules systems
Really great to have more Fat Lardies.
Memories of cutting heads off Airfix Napoleonics to do the conversions with pins and uhu glue. Pre internet, pre superglue.
Really enjoyed this video – Richard has a great way of talking and Ben let the conversation flow very well. Overall I think the coverage BoW have given TFL is fantastic and the more people who can pick up their rules and “just play” the better (whatever the scale…)
Fascinating video and Richard I think is always great on camera. A lovely mix of wry humour and sagely thoughts. I’ve never been into historical, but I really enjoyed the Sharp Practice videos and some of the mechanical elements of Chain of Command I think are really well designed.
Spot on!
@torros Thats pretty much how I got into gaming as well, though never used marbles, lego bricks once, and thought that was pretty dumb and occasionally painful.Think it was Charles Grants Attack that got me using tables and dice.
Richards as Gent as always.
Glad to be a backstager when I see content like this. Too Fat Lardies are an excellent Company and Richard has an excellent eye for games design and a sense of humor. Please do more content like this! Well done beasts!
Absolutely!
Absolutely love the Designer Studio interview series! 😀
This was a joy to watch, loved hearing from Richard, he’s an amazing chap and has been fantastic that Beasts of War have given him time to show case his gaming rules and industry experience. Big thumbs up to Ben for letting Richard talk and guiding the interview with timely open questions. It’s all about hearing from the designer and Ben did a brilliant job. 🙂
fantastic material Ben, good job Im so happy that you came back to designers studio. i am really enjoying this series.
Great video and a nice insight on the things TooFatLardies are about…and did Richard talk about threatening toy soldiers with firecrackers as a kid…?? It alway seems to be the same road leading towards wargaming, be it in England or Germany…;-)
