Hi John, really great series!
Question: What do you do if you make a brushing mistake during this post-dip phase? E.g. I slip and put a streak of white over the blue shoulder pad. How would you correct/cover that up when the base colours have had a tonal change from the dip?
I’m probably, well definitely, a bit of a perfectionist and wondered what you do when mistakes happen. Cheers and really enjoying the series!
Dip is a varnish so the underlying paint is protected. This means that if you are quick, you can get some water and wipe the mistake off with a brush, cotton bud or paper towel without disturbing the paint under the dip.
I’m a bit clumsy so will often apply a thin gloss varnish to parts of the model once I’ve finished painting each part. That way it is easier to clear up my mistakes. At the end, I apply a Matt varnish to take the shine off.
Redvers is totally spot on here. So long as the gloss coat is present then you will find cleaning any mistakes is much easier. 🙂
Also. as an additional to that! Since the gloss has been matted by now, it really is down to making your you are ready to do the finer work. Like I’ve said before, relax, avoid coffee, tea etc.. let your muscles chill out and take your time 🙂
Avoid coffee? Are you mad?
Hmm, John with his meta-John patch. Nice to see that cap isn’t surgically attached.
The flesh tone is getting better, but still looks like John’s Zombie squad. And, what, has hair on the eyebrows evolved away?
I do love my hat though.
Do you prefer to paint the OSL colors from dark to light? I would have thought it would be easier to paint white zenithal shading for the glowing plasma effect, then airbrush a colored tint over it for the glowing effect.
Great hoodie John ! I also enjoy the show. It’s my favourite :3 ! Also when will the Astral Knights kick some xenos’/ heretics ass 😀
Breaking the paint scheme down into different parts really helps me to see how it is done rather than in one big video which can be to much to take in, looking forward to the next part.
Thanks for posting.
I always find that myself. I like to see each colour or step go down and see what each moment does to the model. It’s how I paint at home. Add a few things, wait and see if i still like it after an hour away from it then continue or correct it 🙂
A great video your going way beyond game ready this is display quality territory now john.
I doubt this is display 😉 Maybe “good table top” Keeping it clean and effective is all I want to really achieve 🙂
They look fabulous all the same.
I think the models looked better without the highlighting. To me, highlighting like this just looks like weird random lines all over the model. I know it’s on the edges of stuff and not random, but they look so out of place to me. On the face it looks better because the shade is so much closer to what was on it before, but still looks out of place to me.
