Great work John. I agree, if you have the time brushing the quickshade on the model gives you the best results.
I would never use the Quickshade Dip on my mini’s!…hence due to the problem of the thickness of the product. Even when applying it with a brush gives you more control of its flow I still think it is puddling way to thick in the recesses when dried up. Furthermore I think it gives rhe whole model a dirty look and dulls all the highlights too much. What I would prefer is to use Armypainters Strong Tone (the one which is waterbased) as a wash and mix it with the new Quickshade Wash Mixing Medium 50/50 and then apply it… Read more »
the trick with dip is not to highlight, it’s all about getting them on the table as quickly as possible.
So flat base coat and then dip, it works wonders.
Now you are correct about making it look dirty and dull, so if you have the time once you’ve matt varnished the minis you can go back and add highlight layers over the top which will make them pop again.
In the past I have found having a clean brush and white spirit to hand to remove the dip off white areas helps a lot
Would be good to see some pictures once the quickshade is dried. I find it just leaves a really heavy gloss effect, even after using dullcote.
I will talk about that tomorrow in a bit more depth for you 🙂
I’d check your dullcote, it’s a high gloss finish but I’ve never had any issues once I’ve matt varnished over the top. In fact in one instance the matt was so matt it deadened the metallics too much and I had to go back and brush coat a satin over it to bring them up again
Thanks for the advice, I think the dullcote is fine, it seems to work well on my other minis when I don’t use the Quickshade. It could well be “user error” with the Quickshade, so would be good to get Johns thoughts on this tomorrow.
I’ve used Dullcote over the dip with no problems. I was using it in Australia so not sure if it’s exactly the same as the product in the UK/Europe
TerrainScapes has a camo netting review video he did while building some fortified bunkers.

looks like I will wait for Gerry then 😛
Looking good so far!
@lancorz this is almost the same way as I apply quickshade to my models, however I tend to use a bit of a thinner coat.
Somehow, it’s very satisfying watching a shade go onto a non shaded model. Just the way it pools… aah so relaxing :p
Just a quick link to help you with the ranks and equivalents:

I am going to have to get some of that quick shade great looking stuff.
Brushing on the Quickshade is definitely the way to go. I don’t use good quality brushes like that, though. I have a big pack of cheap kid’s craft brushes that I don’t have to worry about ruining if I don’t clean them well enough. I also make sure to let the can sit in some hot tap water for a few minutes before I start to use it so it’s much thinner and easier to work with I always try to brush it on from the top down, so I can clean up anything that has pooled/dripped down from the… Read more »
