A Darkoath Warqueen Leads Armies To War In Age Of Sigmar
November 7, 2017 by brennon
In addition to all of the news about Warhammer 40,000+775423, there were also some morsels of goodness for us that enjoy Games Workshop's Age Of Sigmar. Namely, they are getting themselves a new logo (see above) AND a new female miniature in the form of the Darkoath Warqueen.
While I like the principle of the model something looks a little odd to me. For example, her thighs seem massive (which is right for a warrior of her might) but they look awkward too. It could just be the pose of the model but it seems a little unnatural.
Away from that, I think the rest of the model looks pretty cool as a match to the Darkoath Chieftain from Warhammer Quest...
While some folks might complain about the amount of flesh on show - it does appear to be a theme across both of these Barbarians and they've done a great job of making it so it's not the main focus of the model. Well, in my opinion anyway.
One hopes we'll be seeing some new Darkoath warriors in the future then as well as an update to the old Chaos Marauder kit which has been around for yonks!
Warhammer Quest Villains
On the subject of Warhammer Quest you will soon be able to pick up the Adversary Pack which offers up new enemies for you to fight against and options for those building their own campaigns.
This is a neat call back to the old card packs they used to do for Warhammer Quest back in the day and it's always nice to have more options when it comes to building your story on the tabletop beyond the bounds of Silver Tower and Shadows Over Hammerhal.
Will you be getting stuck into a new character or campaign for Warhammer Quest?

I agree. Like the idea of a female companion miniature to the male Darkoath chieftan, and agree that despite the amount of flesh, it does fit in with the line rather than come across as exploitative – as it could so easliy have done so. But I also agree that it’s a bit odd and a bit disappointing.
I’d love them to do a new marauder kit too!
I don’t think you will see a new Marauder kit. I think they’re being replaced by units like the Khorne Blood Bound or the Tzeentch Khairic Acolytes. Although I do like the old Marauder kits, as far as followers of thr Dark Gods go, I actually like the new direction they’re taking. I love the fact that even the lowest level of Chaos Followers now look like they belong to a specific God. I am really hoping we see similar models for Nurgle and Slaanesh (although I think the Khairic Acolytes look like they could be Slaanesh worshippers)
But then they could do an Undivided Darkoath kit…I think they would look pretty cool.
More Undivided is always be a good thing. These days there is too much focus on specific Chaos Gods.
I think the undivided stuff, especially the Marauders, lack a certain identify. They just look a little like generic misc barbarians. I personally like the new God specific units. So much so that I now find myself actually enjoying their chaos stuff whereas previously I was a bit meh about it. The demons were ok but the cultists never really felt like they were really into the whole chaos thing. The new models look like they take their religion quite seriously
@lostegg they could do quite a lot of things, it doesn’t mean that they will. I think that the new direction for Slaves to Darkness (and if that doesn’t sound like a Depeche Mode album I don’t know what does) is to create god specific factions and move away from the more “generic” chaos undivided look.
I agree though undivided is still something they can explore down the line and perhaps they will develop its own visual identity more just like they are doing with the four powers.
Again, lots of things they COULD do but I suspect they won’t. A lot of it will be driven by sales; Age of Sigmar appears to be picking up after its initial slow start. However it’s still not in the same league as 40k so I don’t think they will want to dilute sales of current Chaos products by introducing a “generic” version. They can afford to do that in 40k because sales volumes are higher. As far as Chaos Undivided us concerned I think they’re more likely to have champions of Chaos undivided which allow you to take units… Read more »
Come on, new Chaos Warrior sculpts! 😀
GW are teasing people with hints of a Dark Oath faction. Although that might just be GW playing with the community.
I’m not predicting that we will see one – just that I’d like to see one. I get your reasoning behind them not doing undivided, but this is the second new undivided model they’ve brought out recently (if you include the male darkoath chieftan). The main argument I think for supporting undivided is to support sales of existing products. I agree – I really like what they’re doing with the new chaos stuff (mostly) and think it’s really good that the Gods are getting their own dedicated followers. But that leaves existing undivided units looking a bit out of place.… Read more »
Lots of kits will start to look out of place as the old gets phased out for the new. I know because I have 2000points of Bretonnians that now look very out of place
That rather suposes they’re phasing things out. That doesn’t seem to happen very often with plastic kits. I’d say that the End times of WFB was a bit of an exception, but it’s interesting how many kits survived the cull to make it into Age of Sigmar even though they now look very out of place (most of the Empire troops!). With Chaos undivided it’s not just one or two models. There are quite a lot of different troop types. And while they’ve now done Khorne maurauders and Tzeentch marauders, they still haven’t done Nurgle despite their recent releases. And… Read more »
I think most of their old, pre-AoS kits are being phased out and factions will be brought more in line with the new Aesthetics. That’s not to say that there won’t ever be new undivided kits but I think they’re a long way off indeed – so far that I don’t think they’re even being discussed at GW. You might still see occasional characters like this and they will produce AoS rules for them but for the foreseeable future I think we will be stuck with the current Marauder kits
great chaos warriors.
She is so uninspired. Boring as hell.
Quite like the war queen, armour seems almost functional by AoS standards. Maybe the new logo is 2nd ed?
@brennon never bemoan powerful thighs on a woman
Oh don’t get me wrong – powerful thighs are great. Just something about the sculpt seems a little off for me, as if they haven’t got the proportions on her leg right?
It seems ill proportioned for what might be considered a normal human. It’s fine for the Dark Oath clans (based on the Dark Oath Chieftain). I really, really like the model and even if there’s no Warhammer Quest rules forthcoming for her (and I would really like it if there was) I might just use her as a proxy for the Chieftain miniature
@brennon maybe didn’t jump out to me, I think rear leg being obscured makes it look a bit weird. But also muscled up fantasy barbarian troupe.
I don’t think it’s the lack of clothing that is bugging me about that miniature. I think it’s a lack of both presence and detail. If I didn’t know the name of the mini, I would have assumed she was just an unnamed champion who was lower down the ranks than the Chieftan.
Those are not bad at all.
I’m not seeing anything wrong with the pose, the legs are the right size and I think it looks quite dynamic. I think the fact that she has more metal and less animal parts adorning her, in my head at least, is what makes her look more regal. She still has that barbarian look but looks just a little less savage, like she’s learned a few airs and graces.
When I say right size I obviously mean for a woman of that particular race – the Blood Oath Chieftain and Blood Bound warriors are all similarly massive
I like and I think the angle of the mini in the photo doesn’t quite help. I could be wrong though.
Just OK for me. OTT in terms of ornamentation… and then there’s that thigh thing. Could be the angle.
There’s always a push for more realistic proportions in art, but whenever artists actually use real life leg musculature as their guide everybody goes, “Oh it looks weird, why is it so lumpy, that doesn’t seem right!” Happens with comic books most of the time, people are just used to the ultra-smoothed out forms and don’t know any women with muscular legs in real life. Hilarious.
GW have been doing a lot of good things recently, and I’m happy enough with this release that I’d actually like to see more than just this single female model for a Darkoath range (i.e. having a new range with a mixture would be pretty awesome). That said, I’m not really a fan of how GW are doing their teasers; the snippets of models are almost impossible to predict. CB do a similar thing, but they at least give you a release schedule of sorts (as well as the range being smaller) so you actually stand a chance. GW are… Read more »
Not usually a fan of traditional fantasy female minis but I quite like this sculpt – I think it’s something to do with the slightly inhuman/heroic physiology and trappings. The horns all around the helmet evoke a kind of organic Wood Elf/Beastman vibe for me which is really cool.
I loved the Darkoath Chieftain when that came out too so I’m starting to hope this ‘Darkoath’ range might have a bit of a future to it. Add me to the hoping for some new Chaos undivided/Marauders at some point gang too.
I re-watched Conan the Barbarian a few nights ago, and this, this it all the way. Nothing quite like a Barbarian Warqueen to get the job done. Also, i want to put together a Barbarian character for D&D. Hmmmm
With a little conversion work these could become Necrmunda gang leaders.
