Flying Frog Send Us Dungeon Delving in a Weird Wild West
October 24, 2013 by dracs
Flying Frog Productions, the guys behind the great board game Last Night on Earth have turned their attention to the Weird Wild West and have headed to Kickstarter to bring us a board game of cowboys and unspeakable horror. This is Shadows of Brimstone.
Shadows of Brimstone sees players creating characters for themselves and forming an adventuring posse, which must then go down into the dark depths of the mines in order to face whatever evil horrors await them there. The mines expand as your party progresses and a campaign system means your characters will grow from game to game, gaining new equipment as you find new loot and trade at border towns.
The Kickstarter aims to create two core sets for Shadows of Brimstone, each one full of different scenarios, monsters and dungeon systems to explore.
As you can see Flying Frog's latest board game promises to be far more heavily miniature based than those which have gone before. They are apparently aiming more at us miniature hobbyists this time around, intending for gamers to paint their models however they like.
Because of this Flying Frog are going with a larger 35mm scale for Shadows of Brimstone, to make the models easier to paint and pick out the details on and you can see a real difference when compared to their previous board game miniatures.
It is so cool to see the rich opportunities of dungeon crawling being used in a non-fantasy game (its usual favoured genre). As in games like Space Hulk and Incursion, dungeon crawling has always had the option for cool horror, given its claustrophobic set up, so I am excited to see a game which is really trying to explore these possibilities.
Given how good previous Flying Frog games have been, Shadows of Brimstone is sure to be another intriguing game to play and I cannot wait to grab some six-shooters and try it out.
If a mix of cowboys, dungeon crawling and terrifying monsters appeals to you (and let's be fair, who doesn't like the sound of that combo) be sure to head to the Kickstarter and pledge your support.
Thanks to acrizer for giving us the heads up on this.
With little discount the postage and vat for the UK this puts this game way above RRP. It looks different so I’ll take another look once the shipping issue is resolved.
This looks awesome but judging by the firestorm already brewing in the KS comments about the sweet-spot minecart level being hugely different in price for all but early birds I think I’m going to wait and see on this one. Rewarding early birds is I’ve thing but this is something else!
Apologies, ‘one thing’
Hmmmmm…will have to take a look at this one. I’m currently backing Journey: Wrath of Demons but have been a little lukewarm with the way they have been doing stretch goals at the moment. Plus they haven’t given a good run-down the rules yet so I’m a little hesitant to go beyond my initial $100 pledge.
Honestly, comparing this to Journey…I think I would like this game more.
I can understand the minecart anger though, as there is no “regular” minecart level to get. If you missed out on the, I guess we will call “EB Minecarts”, then the only “minecart” left is in the 1,000s. Still for 150 you are already making out like a bandit…(I can hear you guys groaning from here. 🙂 )
I think a lot could be mitigated by offering a standard, no-limit $500 Minecart level.
I agree, I’d like to see an unlimited Minecart level. It’s obvious Flying Frog has a lot of real passionate interested parties. I don’t think the real vocal upset people would be satisfied, though. Unreasonable people are unreasonable by their very description, after all. Overseas shipping is just a monster, though, and has been for a while (both directions) but definitely worse for some. I tried to get a lightweight vacu-formed terrain piece a while back and the shipping was 50%+ the cost of the item; for something on the costly side (and not racking up shipping costs due to… Read more »
I was in searching for a new dungeon crawling game on the horizon and this is a great surprise. Flying frog is a great company, I am big fun of Fortune and glory and their style-quality of their production.
I believe that this will be a great game IF the rules satisfy the needs…
This looks really cool, but I’m a bit bummed they do it in 35mm.
If it was 28mm it would’ve been a no-brainer for me, but now….
Still there’s a good chance I’ll pick it up on retail.
Most of what we call 28mm is 35mm to the eyes
is it me or do some of the minis of core set 2/b look very similar to minis from the bones 2 reaper kickstarter that is also just happening…the tentacles and demon creature look very similar to the shadow demon and tentacles from the 2nd expansion of the bones 2 kickstarter…. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1513061270/reaper-miniatures-bones-ii-the-return-of-mr-bones/posts/639317
Wow. Maor shit storm going on over there…
No communication from the devs. Figures at the wrong scale. Major jumps between early birds of the same tier. Backers leaving in droves.
Could go the way of the Dodo if they don’t buck their ideas up.
There’s been a rep answering questions in the comments section for the past hour now. Lots of whiners there, for sure, but seems to be a vocal minority – definitely a handful of people trying to rile others up (and some absolutely comical statements about what is “acceptable” business… like 5-10% profit is more than enough for a company – take home 50k for every million you make? lol). Anyway, just some quick math, being conservative, the “mine cart” pledge levels are worth about $650+ already. Even the enraging, infuriating, outrageous rip-off of the highest priced mine cart tier is… Read more »
Not sure how you can say backers are leaving in droves when the minimum new backers a day so far is 250 :/ The only problem is all the noise from a few cry babies who missed out on the EB
what tasker was saying was right at the time. If you had seen the daily data for that kickstarter yesterday.

Yesterday they dropped a lot of money and backers but seem to have recovered somewhat now that the rep got more proactive about answering questions.
I need another scale like I need a third nipple. I’ll give this a pass.
Something I find quite disheartening about this, since October 2012 I’ve been working on an extremely similar game which is currently in closed beta testing called CRYPTS with plans to put out a downloadable version in about 6 months time.
Now it appears when I do a LOT of people will think I ripped everything from this game.
That thought is most upsetting
eh… It worked for World of Warcraft 😉
This 35mm scale seems to be getting more popular. Wild West Exodus will be shipping out their new Weird West figures in this scale in November. The companies of course don´t see this as a new scale as both GW and PP make figures that are much larger than 28mm.
Also, they stated that the measurement was to the top of the head… wargame minis are measured ground to eye level, aren’t they?
Huh, I just noticed they claim: “Our new Shadows of Brimstone figures are 35mm to the top of the head to match the scale of amazing figures from Games Workshop, Privateer Press, and others.”
That’s cool. I currently don’t have any money for this kickstarter, but this sure increases the chances of me picking it up at some point.
