Warhammer 40k – Astra Militarum Codex
September 30, 2017 by dignity
We've got another Codex to bring to the table today from Games Workshop for Warhammer 40,000. It's the Imperium this week and the Astra Militarum.
As the backbone of the grimdark future, these soldiers come with an array of options including tanks, infantry, supporting guns and plenty of interesting stratagems.
They aren't as well armoured and armed as the Imperium's finest and the Space Marines but when they work together they can be a dangerous enemy to contend with.

Just stick the Macharius vanquisher in the list.
Tanks are far more survivable but I still think you need some infantry as bubblewrap. A fast moving, close combat army will get inside of your main weapons and do serious damage. Vehicle Squadron: The first time this unit is set up, all models must be placed within 6” of each other, From that point onwards, each operates independently and is treated as a separate unit for all riles purposes. So they are each a separate unit when receiving orders Steel Legion with their ability to disembark, fire (Industrial Efficiency) Then embark again (Move Up) means firing every turn while… Read more »
The Warhammer community page has articles focusing on regiments of the Astra Militarum like Valhallans and Vostroyans. What are the chances that GW will release plastic kits or upgrade sprues to go along with the hype?
Pretty Solid looking list for 100 Power Level – as tekwych says tanks are solid in this edition, with the leman russ Grinding advance rule allowing you to move your tank forward (half movement value) and fire its turret weapons twice (as well as ignoring the -1 to hit penalty for moving and firing your heavy weapons) that army is perfectly viable and pretty terrifying – high toughness multiwound models (like tanks) usually require a lot of dedicated firepower to take down – could be worth including a techpriest engiseer in a chimera to follow them around (or if you… Read more »
Hmmm. Not what I was expecting off this video. Was thinking more of a walk through of the new codex. Looking at the troop choises and what changed.
Me too. I was a little sad that it wasn’t.
Any word on Tau? Got gifted a start collecting set and I am interested. For paint options should I get an older codex?
Not as of yet, but they are pumping them out. I’d reckon Eldar and Orks before Tau but you never know.
As for painting, just use google. Pinterest has a wonderful collection of models that you can look at from various places. Failing that go to a store and talk to the guys there. They’re pretty helpful if sometimes a little sales pushy.
unless a stratergem says once per battle you can use it over and over again, the only other stipulation is you cant use the same stratergem twice or more in a single phase,
So John’s conscript blob would at the start of turn one be 4 units of 30, start of turn two 2 of 30 and 1 of 60, turn three, either 2 of 60 or 1 of 90 and 1 of 30, then turn 4 could be 120 conscripts in a single squad blob.
Using a vehicle’s Smoke Launchers gives your opponent a -1 to hit that vehicle.
I got to get my metal Catachans fixed up. Wonder if a Valkyrie makes sense in the list and how could you do an Adeptus Arbites city-fight style force.
Tempted, very tempted but I just don’t like the current Guard range of infantry models
Who needs infantry models?
This is a very serous thought – going down to 15mm
Has everyone seen the trailer for the new film Downsizing?
Here is my I.G. option:

A few years back there was a guy on TMP sculpting his own 15mm 40k proxies. Can’t remember more than that though the pictures he put up were nice
as far as i am aware an FAQ has gone out on Leman russes. They can fire their battle cannon etc TWICE if they move at half speed or less and do not suffer the movement penalty. So the list you have is even better. Yeah
Split the Leman Russ squadrons into individual tanks and you can get 2 spearhead detachments for an extra command point.
Also I believe for the purposes of combining squads an “Infantry Squad” is a type of squad (i.e. 10 guys with special and heavy weapon option) as opposed to meaning any type of squad containing infantry models.
Thanks for the talk through! I just painted a Shadow War kill team for Imperial Guard, so might just keep adding to it for my own IG army!
I’ve supported the empire of men Kickstarter I saw on here for an armoured fist army
And I’m soooo pleased they’ve added regimental doctrines again, it bugged me that the space marine codexes of previous editions had something to give the army personality yet the assorted regiments of the imperial guard had to be generic despite the lore saying the Imperium holds a million worlds and each one has to produce a regiment
Roll on Saturday, i can’t wait to get my hands on this lovely new codex.
Good overview. As a Krieg player though I need to get the new Codex for my Krieg to see if I want to get this and be able to use the basic Imperial Guard orders. Sorry I just refuse to call them Astra ……..
a nice interesting video guys.
