Community Spotlight: Dark Souls, Death Guard & A Damn Fine VTOL
September 29, 2017 by crew
Come and check out another Community Spotlight for this week showcasing some of the best from our Hobby & Painting Forum which continues to churn out some amazing eyecatchers.
Let's get stuck into a mix of both Fantasy and Sci-Fi today.
Dark Souls by seldon9
Kicking things off for this week we're going to be looking at the work by seldon9 as he does what most of us would love to do - he's painted all of the miniatures from the board game of Dark Souls!
First off it seems pertinent to take a look at the heroes that he's been working on, doing an excellent job on them here with some wonderful attention to detail on the wooden shield there and the hood for the second fighter.
Some of the real awesomeness comes however when you look towards the big enemies he's been working on. In particular, I liked the way the metallics have come together on these models below which have an almost ghostly and ethereal glow to them which I thought was neat.
This scheme and feel for the models continue over into this boss creature here too. What really hit me with this one, in particular, is the glow of the sword and if you head on over to the forum post linked above you'll actually see the source lighting effect he's used to bath the model in a baleful glow.
Last but not least, to highlight another model from his work we have these fellows. It's great to see how even with alternative metallics the scheme and style of the painting work wonders. I like the dark bases (perfect for board gaming) and the hints of light on them too.
This is by no means all of seldon9's work and you can find a lot more of what he's been up to over on the forum post linked above. Get stuck in, see what he's been doing, and take some inspiration and heart from the fact he's been able to paint up the whole lot!
Death Guard by necrothrall
Next up we close in on some Warhammer 40,000 and an army that is coming together nicely from necrothrall on the forums.
One of the things that stood out for me with this collection is the way the scheme ties everything together and a lot of work has gone into painting models that feel very much like the artwork from the Codex.
It's a great scheme done well and executed with a nice grimdark feel to it. A lot of the methods that necrothrall used to bring these models to life can be seen over on the forum thread linked above giving you a taste of some of the paints he used and more.
I particularly liked his work on the Poxwalkers. Generally, I don't like these models but I think that necrothrall has done a great job on them.
When it comes to shambling mutants and zombies this scheme appears to work very nicely indeed. It's nice to see a use of colour to contrast between the innards and the dying flesh of the models too. Wonderful, I bet that's just what you wanted to hear on a Friday right?
VTOL by onlyonepinman
Last but not least we have some more epic Sci-Fi in the form of this VTOL from onlyonepinman.
This rather wonderful VTOL craft here was bought to life via Kickstarter and looks like it would be a perfect fit for the worlds of Infinity or Warpath. One thing that should immediately stand out to you from this paint job is the fact that onlyonepinman has painted the skyline of the city on the cockpit window!
The stark choice of the dark red with the bright white is perfect for a higher Sci-Fi look to the model and you could imagine some dashing pilot from an anime cruising around in this.
A rather snazzy looking entry into Community Spotlight for this week I'm sure you'll agree. There's something a bit old school about the design and the paint job I think which appeals too - maybe it's just the bright and in your face colours?

What do you think of the entries this week?
Nice work all, thumbs up!
Damn @onlyonepinman you beat me to it. Well I guess there is no hurry to finish my Talon now..
Though as I said on FB, its a wonderful paint job 🙂
Mine isn’t a Talon, mine’s a Nightingale so I think there’s definitely still a big rush lol!
Sure, but LARC has made a painted appearance now, it doesn’t really matter what variant I have, you just set the bar lol
Love the reflection on the VTOL’s windows.
The Dark Souls minis are also good. Subtle use of color, but very moody.
Wow three great picks this week, usually there are 3 great picks but again WOW! @seldon9 those are amazing, the highlighting really sets them off.
I absolutely love those Dark Souls miniatures. They’re so weird and spooky and that paint work suits them perfectly. And I think those Deathguard are heading down a much more Nurgly route than GW’s current ‘Eavy Metal scheme. Yeah, I know GW are painting for a specific purpose (to show the model detail) however these guys looks suitably goo-ey and disease ridden.
Well done everyone (including me I guess).
Great job all! Excellent choices!
@onlyonepinman Very much well done to you 🙂 I’ll say it again, I love that green effect on the flyer’s attachments.
@necrothrall Got to agree with Ben, you’ve pitched the colour scheme on your army beautifully.
Thank you for the award. It’s always a pleasure to receive a golden button 🙂
Amazing job everyone. So well deserved.
I keep talking myself out of buying Dark Souls, but then I see minies painted like this, and the Lets Plays on here….my wallet is crying 🙂
