Flying High Over Winding Rivers With Flames Of War
October 17, 2013 by brennon
Flames of War have some new planes on the horizon and they are coming in for a strafing run. As well as that some new Battlefield in a Box terrain is on the cards that will get your troops feet wet.
First up we have the planes that you see above, the Fokker CX and the I-153 Chaika. Both of these saw action with the first being a Finnish aircraft and the second being put into use by the Russians.
I am quite the fan of the Fokker CX but the Chaika looks a bit squat for my taste. Something about it reminds me of a small toy rather than an awesome miniature wargaming vehicle.
As well as the planes you can also head back to your geography class and work out how to make some correct looking rivers with both the Stream and Tributary boxed sets for Battlefield in a Box. I have been using a few of the other sets from this range down at my local club and it's awesome to have some pre-built and battle ready terrain to just get down quickly.
Will you be picking up planes or terrain?
First I love the look of all of it. Second The Chaika reminds me of the stunt planes they were building at the time, but as biplanes they are both probably observer air craft. Third the statement Battle ready is misleading in that if you want grass on it you have to add it your self, and sticking grass to terrain is my nemesis. I will say it is nice that they provide the grass.
They were very much fighters
IIRC was the first aircraft to enter service with fully retractable undercarriage
A variant of the I-15 participated in the Spanish Civil War
It is a really cute aircraft IMHO and not very well represented by the FoW model, but to be fair it is going to be really tiny in 1:100 scale.
The length of the Polikarpov I-16 is only about 6″ in 1/48 scale!
The Chaika was a fighter. It comes from the same era as the Gloster Gladiator and many other bi-planes. Most nations in Europe had bi-plane fighters and ground attack aircraft in the 30’s. Unfortunately for their pilots some still he them in the 40’s.
Can’t say I have seen streams offered before as battlefield terrain, plenty of rivers yes but no streams. Odd as they are naturally more common. Think I may be adding some to my terrain box.
The Chaika just screams “Micro Machines” to me! oh well.
