Heavily Armoured Reinforcements On The Way For The Death Guard Of 40K
September 18, 2017 by brennon
This weekend saw the release of the Deathshroud Bodyguard for the Death Guard of Warhammer 40,000 from Games Workshop.
These warriors, upgraded and gifted with chaos mutations from their time during the Horus Heresy, are back to lend support to their Primarch who has ascended to daemonhood. They have some terrifying weapons with those scythes able to reap their way through pretty much whatever stands in their way.
Their special rule also allows them to leap in the way of oncoming damage from others to protect their designated leader. You might need a few more than three of these for your retinue.
What's New?
Coming this weekend we also have some new models in the form of the Blightlord Terminators.
Bringing into battle all of the weapons you'd associate with Terminators as well as a few more esoteric weapons gifted to them by the Plague Lord himself this is the beginning of a reinvention for the Terminators that serve the Dark Gods.
Whilst I don't expect we're going to see it for all of the different Chaos Gods it would be nice to see variants for Khorne and Slaanesh too alongside what we now have for Nurgle and Tzeentch.
Leading them into battle we also have a new version of Typhus who is already a wrecking ball on the tabletop according to those I've seen playing Nurgle.
The model sees him in a bit more of an animated pose than before with his scythe held high ready to call his warriors forth into battle. He certainly makes those Poxwalker hordes people have been using more dangerous.
What do you make of these new infested and infected miniatures?

Pretty Fly for a Blight guy.
Well played Sir… Well played
Give it to me baby!
I just can’t get past the fussiness of this new range. Clear away the wafts of smoke, stuck on flies, spikes, chains and Nurglings and I suspect you have some beautifully sculpted marines under there. Have they never heard the expression “Less is more”?
I quite like the wafts of smoke and such they’re trying to get into their models – I think they help to add to the dynamism of the models and keep them more in style with their artwork.
I know it can be overdone, but on most models, it’s pretty cool imo.
That’s fair enough. To my mind GW have never quite managed to do justice to the chaos range, they always end up looking either too cartoony or cheesy 80’s metal. I think the additional details take the new look Plague Marines back into the cartoony bracket. This has often been the case for Nurgle models so I get why people still like it.
Eighties Metal is a significant part of 40K’s DNA!
Yeah, GW does not operate on “Less is More” but rather “MOAR METAL!”
The two are mutually exclusive.
I’m not a fan of the smoke not just on these but in general. I think the Chaplain in Dark Vengeance was the first time I saw it, I wasn’t convinced then and I am not convinced now. If I want smoke I will make some using cotton wool or other materials.
@graystoak – It’s called ‘justifying the price tag’ 🙂
I actually like a lot of the new sculpts from GW and their amazing details but they can get a little ‘busy’ so I know what you mean.
I’m really not keen on that Typhus model. He’s just not menacing enough
I think you probably will see things like this for all Chaos Gods, certainly for what I consider to be the 4 god specific Legions (Emperor’s Children, Death Guard, World Eaters and Thousand Sons) because historically they have done so. You have always been able to buy Marines that are specific to those chapters as well as a few faction specific models (Berserkers, Noise Marines etc). And if you look at Age of Sigmar that’s definitely the way that they have been approaching Chaos recently. Khorne, Tzeentch and now Nurgle are all getting their own dedicated ranges of models right… Read more »
Yeah, but the jury is out on Slaanesh and the E-Kids. They’ve gotten rid of the Prince in Age of Sigmar, it seems a small leap for them to destroy him in 40k too.
On the other hand, the Emperor’s Children would be a pretty cool chapter if they were cut off from their god, though. That might make for some interesting stuff.
I don’t see Slaanesh going any were from 40k. He is far too big part of universe (including Emperor’s Children) just to get rid of even if his sad state is result of it’s GW’s own fault. Then again Slaanesh is sadly most underrated from all four Chaos Gods so I was afraid of him until GW not only released Start Collecting boxed set for his demons but also gave focus to Emperor’s Children that are dedicated to him. I hope to see updated and well made take on Noise Marines at some point.
Terminators all look sweet, particularly the Deathshroud and the guy with the huge flail.
Not 100% sold on Typhus but think that is mainly due to such a drastic change in pose compared to his previous incarnation. He looks a little too dynamic and less menacing. That said I am sure he will grow on me, especially once we see some non-Eavy Metal painted versions.
This army should have been out before they did that world campaign as most people only had the Primarus heavy armies to work with. If this army was released before hand the results would have been different or at least much more close of a tie than a flat out win for the Imperial.
The campaigns are always weighted heavily in favor of the Imperium. It’s been true since Ictar IV.
Those minis are…f****** delicious! Very nice. I know a friend of mine, who just bought the Nurgle codex, who will be a happy puppy right about now.
I like ’em, filthier paint scheme and I think they will really pop. Mortarion in the flesh both studio painted and unpainted is so much nicer, think same will be true of these.
New Typhus is little too busy for my taste and his pose is no longer fitting his character. Both new types of Terminators do look really good but I wish that Deathshrouds didn’t have those smoke effects.
some of the best models out are chaos.
Cannot wait to get some of these.
Too busy for me, and they look a bit toy-ish.
They are toys.
He dislikes the aesthetic (which I describe as the Metal look rather than ‘toyish’).
GW has been moving in this sort of exaggerated direction lately- and it is a bit of a shame that it doesn’t match well with most of their pre-End Times minis (even ones that are still being produced).
But right now, there are tons of great ranges of minis out there, in a crazy number of different styles- so not everything has to appeal to everyone.
I really don’t like this version of typhus- it’s far too cluttered. I’m probably gonna get it along with every other death guard mini just because I love the faction but I’ll no doubt be tracking down an old version of typhus too.
I like cartoon ish look of them, should appeal to younger generation of gamers
I like the fact that each of the new Death guard models has so much character to them each telling it’s own story, painting them is going to be a challenge which I look forward to trying even though I am not the greatest painter around it’s going to be interesting.
