I’m a big fan of the polyurethane primers – I’ve been using the Vallejo one, and it puts down such a decent coat that I feel it fully justified the cost of my airbrush setup. As an aside, I find it works very well on MDF too..
Nice paint scheme…simple but effective…..some nice we tips John….Glad you didn’t go with Warzans Black and tan scheme….might of caused a riot!!
Stynylrez is awesome. I don’t know how well it works on top of paint, though. I’ve used Easy Off Oven Cleaner (American brand, sorry) to strip models before. Pop the model into a ziplock bag, spay it down with the oven cleaner and come back in like three hours. Wash it off and it usually takes most or all of the previous paint off without harming the plastic.
A really good look and you are really making over those older units.
Here is a question for John. It looks like you are applying the decals to a matte surface. Most of the modelers I’ve watched apply a gloss coat to a model before applying decals so the decal can lie flat on the gloss coat instead of sitting on the rougher matte coat which can allow air to get behind the decal easier. Then they add another gloss coat to seal the decal followed later by a matte coat to get rid of the shine. Do you prefer to apply decals to matte coats?
When I’ve used the gloss varnish in the past on decal I haven’t used the decal fixer. The be honest I think the decal fixer looks to do a better job on curved surfaces.
To not The
if your not using any kind of decal fix or Micro Sol then yeah it would be better to use the gloss varnish approach.
Thanks!
If anyone has trouble finding Stynylrez in the UK, you can also use Ultimate Modelling Products Primer, its the same stuff, the sell it under licence from Badger, and it is more readily available here.
Most model shops and places like SnMstuff sell the UMP branded one.
@johnlyons I’m still exploring the use of my airbrush can I ask what size needle and what pressure you were using to prime the model?
I believe the needle is a 0.5 and pressure is between 15 and 20psi
Thanks @johnlyons !
Cheers, was going to ask this too!
A few more vlogs like this and I want an airbrush too, because this really shows how effective such a tool is for such deceptively simple tasks.
Very effective scheme. Looks great, makes me want to build a Hammerhead just to try it out.
a great simple dessert pattern.
Great video. Lots of really good ideas – and in the comment too. Thanks everyone!
I really love these videos
