Let’s Play: Small World Underground
September 11, 2017 by thisisazrael
Az & Ben take up arms in Small World Underground, the dark fantasy area control game from Days of Wonder.
Delve into the world of underground fantasy battles as they duke it out across Mystic Crystal Fields, Black Mountains and Muddy Swamps with fantasy races to see who can come out on top.
Gnomes, Lizardmen, Drow and Liches are just some of the races we see, as the guys have to decide where to strike and when to put a race into decline and move onto the next.
In the end, it's the player with the most gold who'll come out on top!
What fantasy race would you most like to lead into battle?

Heard and seen a bit about this game but haven’t had the change to play it.
Looks fun and I like the combination in abilities with the races.
I sold off my physical copy of this earlier in the year and just play it on the app now. Quality game.
I love Small World. It’s always fun. Even if you’re not playing that strategically.
But I never played this version. Does it differ much from the regular version? (It doesn’t look like it.) Or is it just a different flavor of characters and abilities? And could you mix up both games?
They are very similar @bucketknight with most of the changes really just being the theme. Mixing the original and underground is maybe not the best thing to do unless you house ruled land types of your chosen map to work with all the relevant special abilities. There are small card sets you can buy, Tales and Legends being one, which makes the games more exciting as each round a new “world event” happens such a flooding or areas becoming more valuable.

geat game it would be nice to have scored points somewhere on screen for us to see @lanzcore
i have played the original Small Worlds, will have to try and get a game of this version, two comments though, we always play in a way so that you dont get to see what the next potential race/power combo is and in addition I have found that it is so much more fun if you have as many players as possible playing.
I have only played the original with some expansions. I like playing with 5. To bad the 6 player map costs as much as a bar of gold. I have been tempted to make the 6 player board myself several times.
Totally agree that Smallworld rocks best with 4 players, but I just wanted some alone time with @brennon okay! 😛 Az
I have played Smallworld at most player counts and it does stack up nicely as a two player game as much as it does with more players I reckon – of course, there’s more chaos with more players, haha but yes, it was a lot of fun 🙂
@thisisazrael @brennon small world has to be one of my all time favourite drinking games, most fun i have had is with 3 players, it got too incoherent with 4+ though that might have been the absinthe and quantity consumed, 3 players and bottle of scotch, sloe gin or for christmas gaming mulled cider made for very merry times 😀
Thanks for the Let’s Play, as many of the others I’ve only played the original game. I’m sure I’d enjoy this, but I’m not sure I should get it since I already own the original.
As to other two-player games I’ve recently played a lot of Mansions of Madness (2nd ed) and Viticulture with my girlfriend.
