Games Workshop Confirm Next Two Codexes
August 24, 2017 by thisisazrael
Games Workshop is continuing with the promised pace of releases as two more codexes are confirmed for Warhammer 40k.
As we knew next up is the Codex Heretic Astartes: Death Guard.
As expected we'll see new and revamped units in the Codex alongside the army specific tactics and relics.
There's a lot to see in the art released, not least of which is how epic Mortation is leading his legion.
My eyes have been straining so see if that's a new Typhus model in there.....
Codex: Adeptus Mechanicus is next in line for release and is due out shortly after the Codex: Death Guard which releases in September.
"The Adeptus Mechanicus are being re-armed for the new edition with their best codex ever. This book will contain rules for fielding the Cult Mechanicus, the Skitarii and the Knights of the Questor Mechanicus, alongside – for the first time – powerful faction rules for seven forge worlds."
I am excited to see inside the Codexes especially to see what changes from the Indexes.
Though I must admit I am chomping at the bit for a Tau, Necron or indeed any Xenos release, but thankfully we won't have too long to wait at this rate.
Can you pick out the new Death Guard characters spoiled in the art?

I’m guessing they’re doing the ‘new’ factions first ?
Because I don’t understand why they’d pick ‘adeptus mechanicus’ over any of the other factions.
Does anyone know if the Eldar will be just one big book that includes both the ‘evil’ and the new variant ?
I’m 99% sure that GW said there would be a heavy bias towards Imperium vs Chaos, not just in terms of narrative, but that next year Xenos would be given attention, especially those that seem to have been neglected. If the leaked codex release list is anything to go by, then it looks like you’ll have to wait until next year for Eldar and Orks. The Eldar range needs an update if only because so much of it is non-plastic, while both Eldar and Orks have been using some kits that are pretty old. That’s probably the reason for the… Read more »
Given how much granularity GW are starting to add (individual books for each Chaos God in Age of Sigmar for example) I wouldn’t be surprised to see Eldar and Dark Eldar in separate books.
They may even go further than 2 as they Have Harlequins and Ynnari as well as the Craftworld and Dark Eldar.
I think the AdMech codex is just going to be the last 2 mini codexes mixed together into 1 book. which is what it should have been in the first place. Doubt there will be any new models, but it would be nice. I think Eldar will take a lot more work so they are saving it for later once they get the more easier ones out of the way
The AM Codex will also include rules or KNights as mentioned in the text, but I also think there won’t be any new models.
I did notice that a lot of the ‘elite’ Eldar models were listed as ‘finecast’ instead of plastic, which is weird for an army that practically requires them. (did that make sense ?).
So if they are indeed redesigning them that would be a good reason and good news.
Most of the Eldar range was designed around the time GW still sold metal miniatures in stores. The Guardian models are 3rd edition models (I think the Falcon and Vyper as well?).
Eldrad and the Pheonix Lords are 2nd edition models.
I mean, most of the range has aged remarkably well, but it still remains an oddity considering how much core (in the sense that Aspect Warriors are a core part of Eldar identity) stuff is non-plastic.
Nope, even the Falcon and the Vyper are 2nd Edition. It is just proof of the ageless design that they still look cool! And indeed the Guardians are 3rd Edition Releases…
Personally I do not care so much for plastic (today’s gamers are all sissyfied whimps anway… 😉 ) but I have to agree that some Eldar models would benefit from a re-release.
I think they chose AdMech because I just started an AdMech army. I’m important like that
@thisisazrael I can see a possible candidate for a new version of Typhus. There’s a unit of big dudes with huge scythes some way below the drones, facing off against the imperials. The chap furthest to left in this unit has a familiar-looking horned helm… @limburger I’m interested to see how the Eldar/Aeldari codex or codexes turn out too. I’m kind of hoping they get one each, or maybe the four sub-factions across two books. It would be a shame if the Dark or Craftworld flavours missed out on some depth because of everything having to be crammed into the… Read more »
Can’t wait for death guard codex. I think the schedule is probably being influenced by what model releases are accompanying them. I would imagine armies scheduled for major reworks will be next year
We already knew about Death Guard codex but announcement of the AdMech codex is nice surprise.
It looks like Imperial and Chaos factions will be the focus in 40K until the end of the year, much as Order and Chaos factions were at the outset in AoS. Xenos players will have to bide their time for a bit. I’ll just sit with spider like patience in the corner and wait for the Bugs. Hopefully we’ll see Tyranid and/or Genecult codices next year.
While I can feel pain of xenos players it can only be good thing for us more specialist SM players as we might get our codices already this year and not having to proxy our armies as one of chapters from basic SM codex or stuck using Index Book Imperium 1 that long.
Well, it seems like I was wrong. The Warhammer Community site has confirmed that we are getting the Craftworld Eldar and *drum roll please* the Tyranid codices before the end of November. I am suitably pleased.
That said, Admech and Deathguard are really fun factions too, so that should keep me entertained for a while. You have to love the byzantine techno-cult weirdness of the Mechanicus, and the new take on the diseases riddled scions of Nurgle looks very promising indeed, with some truly excellent models.
doesn’t make sense to renew new books if they are going to limit the army’s covered they should renew all the older books, they may loose many of the other players?
Makes perfect business sense. If they release them all at once, people can’t afford to buy them all so won’t buy as many books, also they spread the sales throughout the financial year giving more consistent cashflow, rather than having one massive sales spike.
Yep they need to keep the pattern of sales going throughout the year, not just one big spike.
Looking forward to both codexes but the cover art on DG is dire. When did Nurgle start bestowing pink tentacles on everyone? Where’s the decay? The pus? The weeping, rotting entrails? They don’t look diseased anymore. I’m going to be spending a lot of time turning tentacles into intestines.
You must love the tentacle.
Kirioth TV did call guy in cover Tentacle McGee for a reason. That said it’s nice to see some new cover art work considering that Death Guard Codex is 2nd Codex so far that got brand new cover art work besides of Space Marine Codex while others so fat have had they old cover work.reused.
Or the tentacle will love you? …..
wrong for so many reasons ……. or I have just sprung my mate Ev watching japanese tentacle Animie one too many times …….. 😉
My anime watching is rather limited, and limited to no tentacles. Bleach and Ghost in the shell mostly
But first sentance is fair description of me.
Well that announcement is disappointing. I would have hoped theyd be doing something resembling an even spread release wise. But 3 releases in a row pretty much feels the same
Not that keen on mortarions pose, looks way to much like nagash
I like his pose but the amount of stuff I’m going to be trimming off him is nuts.
Okay traditionally, I am an ” Imperium kind of guy” (Well I played Squats and they were imperium) I have been a Raven Guard Primarius Successor Chapter as my re-entry point (Mainly because 1) Corax is cool and 2) I’m not happy with the way I paint white, so this is a white armour project) BUT damn …..I did like the Plauge Marines in the starter box …… I think Mulch the snail in Blight Wars is the cutest thing on 24 legs……. and I really like the look of Mortarion andthe mew Plauge Terminators………bloody Nurgle is infectious isn’t it… Read more »
